Nights of trotting in Montegiorgio, between races under the stars and the Italian Trot Driving Championship
The San Paolo Racetrack in Montegiorgio, in the province of Fermo, is one of the most beloved venues for trotting enthusiasts in Italy. Nestled in the countryside of the Val Tenna, a few kilometers from the historic center, it covers a total area of about 220,000 square meters: a race track with a unique design, considered one of a kind in Italy, ample public spaces, stables, paddocks, and training tracks. Here, for generations, trotting horses and their drivers have competed on classic summer evenings under the stars.
The summer season at San Paolo is not a one-day event, but a full schedule that runs from June to the second half of August. Meetings are almost always held at night: the stands fill up as the sun sets, and the starting bell sets the pace for seven or more races per evening, featuring prizes dedicated to two- and three-year-old foals and races reserved for high-class mares. It's a popular and family-friendly event, where the elegance of equestrian sport blends with the conviviality of summer evenings in the Marche region.
The most anticipated moment of the season is the Italian Trot Driving Championship (CIGT), the competition that pits the best drivers on the national scene against each other to award the title of Italian Champion. Montegiorgio has been the home of this challenge for decades: qualifiers select the protagonists, and everything is decided in the grand mid-August Final, one of the highlights of Italian horse racing, capable of attracting a large audience and the most important names in the sector.
Evenings at San Paolo also offer dining services with food stalls within the facility, ideal for enjoying the races while dining trackside. In recent years, the racetrack has expanded its offerings with a new equestrian center dedicated to all-around horseback riding activities, in addition to traditional trotting. A sporting and cultural heritage that the Municipality of Montegiorgio and the Marche Region continue to promote as a symbol of the Fermo territory's identity.
The 2026 summer season at the San Paolo in Montegiorgio kicks off on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, with an evening night meeting. The calendar continues throughout the summer until the peak of Ferragosto, when the racetrack hosts the Final of the Italian Trot Driving Championship (CIGT) on Sunday, August 16. A major new feature for 2026 is the official debut of the New Royal Equestrian Center, a facility that complements traditional trotting with lessons, show jumping, boarding, and horse rehabilitation.
Night meeting no. 19 of the year, with seven races scheduled. Before the start, at 7:10 PM and 7:20 PM, qualification trials for two- and three-year-old foals will take place; the first race starts at 7:50 PM.
The CIGT is the common thread of the season, with stages that select the best drivers leading up to the grand finale:
Between one stage and the next, the calendar includes numerous other trotting race evenings. The complete program for each meeting is published weekly on the racetrack's official channels.
