The oldest and most deeply felt Holy Week ritual in Alcamo, starting from the Church of Sant'Oliva

The Procession of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows is the highlight of Holy Week in Alcamo, a populous town in the province of Trapani, Sicily. Held every year on the afternoon of Good Friday, it is considered one of the island's most ancient Easter rites, deeply rooted in the local devotion of Alcamo for generations.
The procession begins at the Church of Sant'Oliva, a jewel of Sicilian Baroque architecture overlooking Piazza Ciullo, rebuilt in 1724 based on the design of the Trapani architect Giovan Biagio Amico. From here, the glass urn containing the effigy of the deposed Jesus and the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows—dressed in a richly embroidered purple mantle and a black veil adorned with gold—are carried out.
The two effigies are carried on the shoulders of congregants, who for the occasion dress in black and wear a crown of thorns on their heads. The procession is led by a long, double line of the faithful, many of whom walk barefoot as an act of penance.
One of the most evocative features of the Alcamo procession is the participation of children in costume, who portray traditional figures: Samaritans, Judiths, little angels, and other characters linked to the Gospel narrative. It is this blend of the sacred and the popular that makes the ritual so vibrant and eagerly awaited by the local community.
The procession winds through the main streets of Alcamo's historic center: from Corso VI Aprile to Via Caruso and Via Navarra, through Piazza Repubblica and Piazza Trinità, and along Corso San Francesco di Paola, Via Roma, and Via Cavour, finally returning to Piazza Ciullo in front of the Church of Sant'Oliva. The parish's Easter rites are organized by the Congregation of Maria Santissima Addolorata, with the involvement of the Santissimo Crocifisso association.
The Good Friday procession is part of a calendar of rites that bring Alcamo to life throughout Holy Week: from the traveling reenactment of the Passion of Christ on Palm Sunday, featuring a hundred costumed participants, to the celebration of the Resurrection in the Mother Church. An intangible heritage that makes Alcamo one of the most interesting destinations for those wishing to experience the Sicilian Easter in its most authentic form.
The Good Friday Procession in Alcamo is renewed every year during Holy Week. For the 2026 edition, the dates and detailed program have not yet been published by the organizers.
