The neighborhood procession starting from Piazza Clemente XI, in the heart of Primavalle
The Primavalle Patronal Feast is one of the most deeply rooted religious and popular events in Rome's 14th Municipality, in the Lazio region. Its focal point is Piazza Clemente XI, a wide and sunny square dominated by the Church of Santa Maria Assunta e San Giuseppe, which serves as the architectural and spiritual heart of the area. From here, on a late afternoon in May, the procession sets off, winding through the district's streets lined with residents.
The church hosting the feast was built alongside the neighborhood: construction began in 1932, during the years when Primavalle was being developed as a working-class district on the outskirts of Rome. Originally dedicated solely to the Assumption of the Virgin, it took on its dual title with the addition of Saint Joseph following renovations in the 1950s. The parish was canonically established on April 16, 1951, and entrusted to the Congregation of the Poor Servants of Divine Providence. Between 1952 and 1953, architect Renato Costa redesigned the interior and added the facade. In December 2024, Pope Francis elevated it to a titular church, a recognition that has brought new momentum to the neighborhood's community life.
The route is not fixed and varies slightly from year to year, though it always begins at Piazza Clemente XI. Recent editions have featured two main itineraries:
The departure is traditionally set for 5:30 PM, allowing the procession to traverse the neighborhood in the warm light of the late afternoon before returning to the church for the closing celebration.
Do not expect a major tourist event: the Primavalle Patronal Feast is a local devotion. Families gather on their balconies, shops stay open past their usual hours, and children follow the procession alongside their parents. A brass band sets the pace, confraternities and parish groups lead the way, and the statue is carried on shoulders. Residents often say it is the only day of the year when Via Federico Borromeo and Via dell'Assunzione are completely cleared of cars: the neighborhood truly reclaims its streets.
Born in the 1930s as a public housing district northwest of the city, beyond the Monte Mario ridge, Primavalle is today a piece of Rome with a very strong community identity. Its squares—Clemente XI, Capecelatro—are the places where neighborhood life is defined. The patronal feast, along with the parish's summer initiatives, remains the moment when this identity is most openly displayed, in a city where major Vatican and Jubilee celebrations often overshadow peripheral devotions.
The procession causes temporary traffic closures and diversions for several Atac bus lines. In recent editions, lines 46, 46B, 49, 91, 916, and 983 have been affected, with restrictions concentrated in the afternoon. Roma Servizi per la Mobilità publishes official notices in the days leading up to the event.
For the 2026 edition, the parish of Santa Maria Assunta e San Giuseppe chose a Sunday afternoon, May 31, closing the Marian month with the neighborhood feast. The departure took place at 5:30 PM from Piazza Clemente XI.
The route extended towards Via dei Monti di Primavalle, crossing Via dell'Assunzione and Via Torrigio: a wider path compared to 2025, involving a larger portion of the district. Roma Servizi per la Mobilità had signaled possible traffic changes for the entire day, from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
Lines 46, 46B, 49, 91, 916, and 983 were diverted or limited during the afternoon, with service restored after the procession passed.
