A trail of forty nativity scenes among fir and larch trees above Ziano di Fiemme
The Presepi nel Bosco of Zanolin (Nativity Scenes in the Woods) is one of the most beloved Christmas traditions in Val di Fiemme, located in the municipality of Ziano di Fiemme (Province of Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige). Every winter, a stretch of fir and larch forest above the small hamlet of Zanolin hosts a loop trail dotted with dozens of handcrafted nativity scenes, lovingly set up by the local villagers.
The route starts from the Zanolin hamlet square and follows a loop of about 1.5 kilometers, which can be completed in just under an hour. The path is marked by comet-shaped signs and winds through the Cavelonte woods: a simple and accessible route, perfect for families with children. Along the way, you will encounter forty to fifty unique nativity scenes, each one different from the last.
The uniqueness of this event lies in the imagination behind the nativity scenes: some are suspended from branches, others are enclosed in small glass orbs, and some are crafted from recycled materials like plastic cups, fabric, or corks, while others are modeled using natural elements such as pinecones, moss, and wood. Each edition enriches the trail with new creations.
The idea for the Presepi nel Bosco was born in the winter of 2011-2012, when the first anonymous nativity scene appeared in the woods above Zanolin. The following year, the initiative involved the hamlet's residents and transformed into a full-fledged trail, growing with every edition. Over the years, the event has become a symbol of the Christmas spirit in the community of Ziano di Fiemme.
The nativity scenes remain on display throughout the winter, offering the perfect opportunity for a pleasant walk on a quiet, peaceful trail. Admission is free. Sturdy boots are recommended, and trekking poles are advised in case of snow; the path is not suitable for strollers. It is a simple, authentic experience that captures the true atmosphere of Christmas in the mountains, in the heart of the Trentino Dolomites.
For the 2025-2026 winter season, the Zanolin forest in Ziano di Fiemme once again hosted the traditional nativity trail.
