The Nativity in the heart of the Rabatana

The Living Nativity of Tursi takes place in the Rabatana, the ancient quarter of Arab-Saracen origin perched on the Matera town. Among alleys, caves, and characteristic formations of yellow sandstone, over a hundred participants of all ages reconstruct the Nativity and scenes of past life, with costumes, ancient crafts, and increasingly rich settings.

A path that is also a journey through history

The nativity scene winds its way near the medieval church of Santa Maria Maggiore, in a setting made unique by the architecture and nature of the place. It is no coincidence that the Rabatana is also famous for being sung by the dialect poet Albino Pierro in his famous work A' Ravatène. The event combines religious sensitivity with the enhancement of historical and landscape heritage, attracting religious tourism and media attention.

A consolidated tradition

Organized by the Pro Loco of Tursi with the collaboration of the Cathedral Parish of the Annunciation and the Municipality of Tursi, the Living Nativity was born about fifteen years ago and has established itself as one of the most appreciated Christmas events in the Ionian area of Basilicata. A free shuttle service connects the town center to the quarter.
