About Infiorata Ferrandina

On the occasion of Corpus Domini, Ferrandina transforms with a unique flower carpet: not fresh petals, but thousands of roses made of crochet wool, the work of the Associazione Donna 2000 & Amici workshop. A carpet of wool flowers laid out before the Blessed Sacrament during the procession, the result of months of collective work.

A flower carpet unlike any other

The Infiorata di Ferrandina is an almost unique case in Italy. While traditional flower carpets compose their carpets with fresh flower petals, here the artists of the Matera village work for months on crocheted roses, skein after skein, until they compose a spread of wool flowers that accompanies the procession of Corpus Domini.

Art and devotion, hand in hand

The project originates from the wool workshop of the Associazione Donna 2000 & Amici and involves numerous women from the community. Each rose is an offering: a symbol of devotion, prayer, and promise. The flowers are neither bought nor sold, but are donated for a moment of faith and spiritual sharing, in what has been described as "a collective and tireless rite of art and devotion".

The carpet before the Blessed Sacrament

On the day of the solemnity, the wool roses are arranged to form a carpet laid out before the Blessed Sacrament, which passes in solemn procession through the streets of Ferrandina. It is the culmination of a choral work that unites generations and renews the bond between the community and its religious tradition each year.

Ferrandina, Aragonese village in the Matera region

The initiative is part of the life of the Municipality of Ferrandina, a village in the Province of Matera founded in the early 16th century, and represents one of the most heartfelt moments of the local religious calendar, capable of attracting attention even beyond the town's borders due to its originality.
