The Nativity comes alive in the ancient heart of Pisticci
When December envelops Basilicata and the air becomes crisp, Pisticci — one of the most characteristic villages in the Matera area, famous for its white Dirupo district — lights up for Christmas and stages its Living Nativity scene. The performance takes place in the Vertical Garden area, a natural setting that slopes down the village hillside and, with its terraces and views, seems tailor-made to host the Nativity.
Along the path, dozens of costumed figures recreate the Bethlehem of two thousand years ago: shepherds, artisans, innkeepers, laundresses, and vendors animate the scenes, while visitors walk among lit fires and the scents of bread and traditional Lucanian sweets. The journey leads, scene by scene, to the grotto of the Holy Family. It is a path that intertwines popular faith and peasant memory, bringing ancient crafts and the gestures of a community that gathers around its nativity scene back to life.
The Living Nativity scene of Pisticci is one of the most cherished events of the Christmas period in the municipality, capable of attracting visitors from nearby towns in the Metapontino and inland areas. The setting of the historic center, with its white houses and narrow alleys, enhances the evocative power of the performance, which is held in the evening hours when the lighting and braziers create a intimate and magical atmosphere. A precious opportunity to discover, in addition to the Nativity, the authenticity of a Lucanian village in the heart of the province of Matera.
Following tradition, the Living Nativity of Pisticci is also expected for Christmas 2026 in the Vertical Garden area, in the historic center of the village. The performance will presumably take place on the days around Christmas, in the evening, with the usual route through scenes of the Nativity and ancient Lucanian crafts.
The detailed program and definitive dates for the 2026 edition will be announced in the coming weeks by the organizers. The structure of the event traditionally includes: the evening opening of the route in the Vertical Garden, scenes of rural life and ancient crafts, artisan workshops, and the grotto of the Holy Family.
How to get there: Pisticci is reachable from the SS 407 Basentana (Pisticci exit) and is about an hour from Matera. The performance takes place in the Vertical Garden area, in the historic center.
Admission: the event is generally free admission.
Tip: wear comfortable shoes for the sloping path and warm clothing, as it is an outdoor evening event.
