The most evocative living nativity scene in Italy, among the stones of the Sassi
The Living Nativity Scene in the Sassi di Matera is considered one of the most beautiful and evocative living nativity scenes in Italy. Every year, during the Christmas season, the Sasso Caveoso transforms into a large open-air stage: the caves, alleys, and rock churches of the Sassi city become the natural setting for the reenactment of the Nativity, in a setting that seems made to evoke ancient Bethlehem.
The event unfolds along a route of about 1.5 km, starting from the historic center and crossing the Sasso Caveoso, from the Piazza San Francesco area to via Bruno Buozzi. Along the way, visitors encounter over 200 figures in period costume, including historical reenactors and theatre companies from all over Italy, who bring scenes of daily life, ancient crafts, and traditional moments to life.
The event is organized by Prisco Provider Eventi & Comunicazioni in collaboration with the Diocese of Matera-Irsina and the Municipal Administration. In recent editions, the nativity scene has been characterized by a strong message of dialogue and peace, in full harmony with the intercultural vocation of Matera, Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue 2026.
Experiencing the living nativity scene means crossing one of the most fascinating places in Italy during one of the most magical seasons of the year. The light of torches and fires, the silence of the Sassi, and the presence of the figures create an immersive experience that attracts thousands of visitors from all over Italy each year.
For Christmas 2026, the Living Nativity Scene in the Sassi di Matera confirms the formula that has made it one of Italy's most beloved Christmas events: a route of approximately 1.5 km in the Sasso Caveoso, animated by over 200 figures in period costume, historical reenactors, and theatre companies.
