The ritual of light that extinguishes the Sassi and relights them with torches
Matera Cielo Stellato is one of the most poetic and identity-defining events in the city: for about an hour, the public lights of the Sassi are turned off and the ancient districts are once again illuminated only by thousands of candles, small lamps, and torches. The result is a vision suspended in time, in which Matera's stone seems to re-emerge from the night as it must have appeared centuries ago, under a truly starry sky.
The event takes place mainly in the Sasso Barisano — among streets, houses, and alleyways — with Piazza Duomo serving as the control centre, temporarily closed to the public for safety reasons. Along the alleys, music, particularly piano and electronic, and narration guide participants on a journey of contemplation and listening, transforming the city into a shared space of silence and wonder.
The ritual tells how, in different eras, light marked significant moments in Matera's collective life: a gesture that intertwines memory, spirituality, and a sense of community. More than a spectacle, it is a participatory experience, in which residents and visitors share the same gaze on the Sassi freed from contemporary lighting.
Matera Cielo Stellato is included in the official programme of Matera Mediterranean Capital of Culture and Dialogue 2026, within the "Stratifications" pillar dedicated to time and memory. Promoted by the Municipality of Matera and the Matera-Basilicata 2019 Foundation, the event is one of the laboratories of culture, vision, and community through which the city tells its deepest identity.
On September 26, 2026, Matera Cielo Stellato will animate the Sassi within the "Stratifications" pillar of Matera Mediterranean Capital of Culture. Music and narration will guide an hour of collective contemplation.
