The bilingual festival of the white asparagus of Sant'Andrea di Gorizia
The Praznik špargljev - Festa degli Asparagi celebrates the symbolic product of Sant'Andrea (Štandrež in Slovenian), a hamlet of Gorizia: the white asparagus, which boasts a centuries-old history here. So prized that, according to local tradition, even Napoleon was said to have been captivated by it. Every year, in May, the community gathers in the parish park to honor this agricultural excellence with a grand popular festival.
The stars of the table are naturally the white asparagus, served according to the ancient peasant recipe: cut into pieces and accompanied by hard-boiled eggs, a preparation born from the recovery of broken tips that could not be sold. Alongside the asparagus, the stalls offer traditional local cuisine, in a menu that tells the story of the encounter between the Italian and Slovenian roots of this borderland.
Organized by the Štandrež Cultural Circle, the festival is deeply bilingual: here the border does not divide, but mixes languages, cultures, and flavors. The evenings are enlivened by live music — trios, bands, and accordion nights — which accompany dinner and dancing, in a familiar and festive atmosphere that invites you to live life slowly.
Experiencing the Asparagus Festival means discovering the authentic identity of the Slovenian community of Gorizia, guardian of unique gastronomic and cultural traditions. A genuine and welcoming event, perfect for those who want to taste the true flavors of the region away from the tourist crowds.
