The Zeza di Bellizzi Irpino brings the town's main street to life with songs, masks, and the quadrille
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Pratola Serra Carnival is a street festival that brings the center of this town in the province of Avellino, Campania, to life during the Carnival season. For an afternoon, Corso Vittorio Emanuele transforms into an open-air stage: music, dancing, traditional costumes, and masks invite families, children, and visitors to join a collective walk that is both a show and a community ritual.
Rather than a grand parade of allegorical floats, this is something rarer: the staging of a popular Irpinian tradition with roots spanning centuries, brought to life with colorful sets and the direct participation of the public, who are invited to join the fun rather than just watch.
The highlight of the event is the performance by the Zeza di Bellizzi Irpino, a folk group recognized as intangible cultural heritage of Campania. The "Canzone di Zeza" is a traditional sung Carnival farce, performed by men, which tells the story of Pulcinella, his wife Zeza, and their daughter being courted by a suitor. The singing is followed by the quadrille, a choreographed dance that concludes the performance and involves the entire square.
The group from Bellizzi Irpino, a district of the provincial capital Avellino, is one of the most renowned guardians of this tradition: in 2024, they were guests at the Venice Carnival, returning after twenty-nine years, and have been featured in numerous festivals dedicated to intangible heritage. Their presence in Pratola Serra gives the festival a value that goes beyond mere entertainment: it is a way to introduce younger generations to an oral repertoire that might otherwise be lost.
Pratola Serra is a small municipality overlooking the Sabato river valley, just a few kilometers from Avellino and a little over an hour from Naples. The local calendar is marked by deeply felt events: the feast of the patron saints Maria SS. Addolorata and San Gerardo Maiella in September, the "Puozzi passà p'a Pratola" folk music festival in summer, and the "Christmas Enchantment" in December. The Carnival fits into this cycle as the first major collective moment of the year.
Irpinia is, after all, one of the Italian regions where the rural Carnival remains most vibrant: from the tarantella of Montemarano to the floats of Paternopoli, and from the "zeze" of Cesinali, Capriglia Irpina, and Mercogliano to the "mascarate" of the valley towns, every community preserves its own version of the ritual. Attending the Pratola Serra festival means entering a broader cultural system, which in the province of Avellino is not just a postcard-perfect folk display, but a living practice.
The event is promoted by the Pro Loco of Pratola Serra with the support of the Municipality of Pratola Serra, the Forza Giovani Pratola Serra association, and the Misericordia, with the stated goal of promoting local cultural heritage and offering the community a moment of gathering and celebration.
The last edition documented by public sources was on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. No official communication has been found for 2026, neither on the Municipality's channels nor those of the Pro Loco: the date shown in this entry is purely indicative and coincides with Shrove Tuesday. Before traveling, it is advisable to check directly with the organizers.
At the time of verification, no official information has been published regarding the 2026 edition of the Pratola Serra Carnival: neither the Municipality of Pratola Serra website nor the Pro Loco channels provide dates, times, or a program. The entry remains active because the event was documented in 2025, but the information should be considered unconfirmed.
If the festival were to be repeated in the same format, it would take place in the afternoon along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, with music, dancing, traditional costumes, typical masks, and the performance of the Zeza di Bellizzi Irpino, the sung farce recognized as intangible cultural heritage of Campania. However, none of these elements have been officially announced for 2026.
For confirmation, it is advisable to contact the Pro Loco of Pratola Serra directly at +39 348 3194031 or via email at [email protected], or to follow the association's Facebook page in the weeks leading up to the Carnival.
