Allegorical floats and masks along the banks of the Lete River
In the heart of winter, the small Municipality of Pratella, in the province of Caserta (Campania), transforms for a few days into the stage for one of the most authentic carnivals in the Volturno Valley. The Pratella Carnival is not the result of a massive organizational machine: it is the fruit of the voluntary work of local groups who build allegorical floats every year and bring them onto the streets, towed by farm tractors just as they were in the past.
The event is promoted by the Pro Loco of Pratella, affiliated with UNPLI, with the patronage of the municipal administration. It was born from the desire to revive a tradition that once enlivened the village for three consecutive days, when teams of young people competed to create the most beautiful and original float.
The hallmark of the parade is its artisanal nature. The floats are built in the preceding months using humble materials like papier-mรขchรฉ and wood, and traction is provided by the same farm tractors that work the valley's fields throughout the rest of the year. Masked groups parade around the floats with music, confetti, and improvised street dancing: there is no clear separation between spectators and participants, which is perhaps the most charming characteristic of the Pratella carnival.
The parade is not limited to the center: the municipal territory includes the hamlets of Mastrati and Roccavecchia and the village of Selvapiana. In recent editions, the floats have taken turns reaching the various localities, bringing the celebration to even the smallest neighborhoods. The landscape plays its part: the procession moves along the banks of the Lete River, in a green valley floor enclosed by the Matese mountains.
The eighteenth edition was scheduled for Saturday, February 14, 2026, but adverse weather conditions forced the Pro Loco to postpone everything by one week: the celebration took place on Saturday, February 21, 2026. This postponement was announced in the days prior by local press and accepted without drama by the village, which is accustomed to the uncertainties of February mountain weather.
Pratella has just over 1,300 inhabitants and is located about 152 meters above sea level, in the inland area of the province of Caserta bordering Molise. The historic center preserves its medieval layout, with narrow alleys and remains of walls and towers, and the parish church dedicated to Saint Nicholas, the town's patron saint. The territory is famous for its waters: the mineral springs that flow at the foot of the Matese have given rise to a bottling industry known throughout Italy, and the Lete River accompanies much of the municipal route.
For those visiting inland Campania, the Pratella Carnival is an opportunity to see a side of the region far from the tourist circuits: no grand stages, just a community that organizes itself and opens its streets to anyone passing through.
The festival is held outdoors in the middle of winter: it is best to dress in layers and expect a few hours of walking following the floats. Dates can vary from year to year and, as happened in 2026, be moved at the last minute due to bad weather: before setting off, it is always a good idea to check for updates released by the Pro Loco of Pratella and the Municipality.
2026 marked the eighteenth edition of the Pratella Carnival, in the province of Caserta. The event, initially set for Saturday, February 14, was postponed by the organizers due to poor weather conditions and rescheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026.
As per tradition, the organization was handled by the Pro Loco of Pratella, which wanted to ensure the village could still enjoy its festival: an opportunity to experience the carnival among friends and family and to offer fun for the little ones. The absolute protagonist, even in this edition, was the parade of allegorical floats created by local groups.
Pratella is located in the Alto Casertano, in the Volturno Valley, a short distance from the border with Molise. By car, take the A1 motorway exit at Caianello and continue along the roads of the Volturno Valley. The nearest train station is Vairano-Caianello, on the Rome-Cassino-Naples line; from there, a bus connection or private transport is required.
Free admission to all parades and town square celebrations.

Outdoor event in the middle of winter: warm clothing, comfortable shoes, and pay attention to updates in case of bad weather, as postponing the parade is a real possibility.
