About Prata Carnival

Every February, the Prata Carnival transforms Prata di Principato Ultra, a village in the Sabato Valley near Avellino, into an open-air theater of color, music, and joy. Organized by the local Pro Loco with the support of the Municipality, the event centers on a parade of allegorical floats built by local volunteers and groups, accompanied by masked revelers, street dancing, food stalls, and a final awards ceremony for the most original float and costume.

The Prata Carnival: A Community Celebration

In Prata di Principato Ultra, a small town overlooking the Sabato Valley just a few kilometers from Avellino, Carnival is more than just a winter break; it is the moment when the entire community gathers in the streets. Organized by the Pro Loco of Prata with the patronage of the Municipality of Prata di Principato Ultra, the Prata Carnival stages a true explosion of color, music, and imagination through the town center, involving children, families, and groups of friends in a collective ritual that renews itself every year. As the organizers emphasize, Carnival here is tradition, it is imagination taking shape, and it is the village coming together to walk side-by-side amidst music, laughter, and joy.

Two Days of Parades: Sunday and Shrove Tuesday

The event follows a well-established format centered on two main dates: Carnival Sunday and Shrove Tuesday. On both days, the gathering is set for the early afternoon at the market area, which locals call the "mercatone". From there, the procession takes shape and winds through the town: allegorical floats, masked groups, loud music, and confetti accompany the parade as it reaches the main squares, where the celebration turns into a collective dance. It is a joyful procession that touches every street in the village, ensuring no one is left out of the festivities.

Allegorical Floats: A Labor of Love

The heart of the Prata Carnival lies in the allegorical floats, built in the weeks leading up to the event by local volunteers and groups. These are not the monumental machines seen at major national carnivals, but rather artisanal creations born from the ingenuity and patience of their makers: papier-mรขchรฉ, wood, fabric, paint, and plenty of creativity. Each float tells a story, a satire, or depicts a current character, and is the result of evenings spent together in local garages and workshops. To recognize this effort, the Pro Loco awards prizes at the end of the event.

Costumes, Music, and Awards

On Shrove Tuesday, after the dancing, comes the most anticipated moment: the awards ceremony for the most original float and costume. During the ceremony, the town remains in a festive mood with food stalls and music that keep the celebration going until evening. It is the perfect opportunity to taste traditional seasonal sweets and local Irpinian cuisine in an informal atmosphere suitable for all ages and budgets. Participation is open to anyone who wants to wear a costume; you don't need to belong to an organized groupโ€”just show up at the meeting point.

Prata di Principato Ultra: Between Irpinia and the Sabato Valley

The village is part of the Province of Avellino, in Campania, and is located in the hilly belt crossed by the Sabato River, an agricultural area known for its vineyards and proximity to the villages of inland Irpinia. Prata houses the monumental complex of the Basilica dell'Annunziata, the destination for spring festivities dedicated to the Virgin, and the Baronial Palace, which hosts exhibitions and cultural events. The local calendar includes other events throughout the year, from the Prata Jazz Festival to the Santa Lucia celebrations in December, and the Prata Art&Wine Fest at the end of summer.

Carnival in Irpinia: A Mosaic of Rituals

The Prata Carnival is part of an extraordinarily rich territorial context: in Irpinia, the weeks leading up to Lent are a mosaic of folk rituals rooted in ancient customs. There are famous carnivals like the one in Montemarano, with its tarantella and 'ntreccio dance, those in Paternopoli and Serino, the "zeza" masks, and the rituals surrounding the death of Carnival. Prata di Principato Ultra brings a more intimate, village-style celebration to this calendar, where the value lies not in spectacular scale but in total participation: a precious opportunity for those who want to discover the less touristy and more authentic side of Campania.

Why It's Worth Visiting

  • Authenticity: A village Carnival, not built for tourists, where you can breathe in the sense of community.
  • Family-Friendly: Afternoon parade, confetti, costumes, and music in a safe, family-oriented setting.
  • Local Gastronomy: Pro Loco stalls allow you to taste Irpinian flavors and traditional Carnival sweets.
  • Free Admission: Watching the parade costs nothing; just arrive in town by the meeting time.
  • Ideal Base: Prata is just a few kilometers from Avellino, allowing you to combine the festival with exploring Irpinia and its wines.

Prata Carnival 2026

For the 2026 edition, the Pro Loco of Prata, with the patronage of the Municipality of Prata di Principato Ultra, chose the proven two-day format: Sunday, February 15 and Shrove Tuesday, February 17, 2026, both with a gathering at 2:30 PM at the "mercatone," the starting point of the grand parade.
