The neighborhood masquerade parade featuring stilt walkers, magic, and a potluck dinner
Far from the grand allegorical floats that have made the Italian Carnival famous, the Portuense Carnival Festival tells the story of a different Italy: one of neighborhood traditions, parishes that remain vital social hubs, and streets that belong to everyone for an afternoon. The event is organized by the Sacra Famiglia Parish in Portuense, located at Via Filippo Tajani 10, within the Municipality XI of the City of Rome, in the Lazio Region.
Portuense is one of the capital's most popular and layered districts: established along the ancient road connecting Rome to the port of Fiumicino, it developed in the 20th century as a residential and working-class area with a strong local identity. The Sacra Famiglia church, inaugurated in the late 1970s, is one of its most active gathering centers, and the Carnival is among the events that best express this community spirit.
The heart of the day is the masquerade procession that leaves the parish grounds in the late afternoon to wind through the neighborhood streets. The route touches some of the most familiar arteries for residents:
There are no papier-mรขchรฉ floats or grandstands here: just children in costume, confetti, streamers, and a group of stilt walkers leading the parade, making the procession visible and recognizable from afar. The pace is that of a leisurely stroll, designed so that even the youngest children and families with strollers can participate without difficulty.
Once back at the parish, the procession disperses and the celebration takes on a new form. The program typically includes a snack for children, an aperitif for adults, and a show in the hall or courtyard: depending on the year, this has featured magic acts or circus performances with tightrope walkers, jugglers, and fire-eaters. The evening concludes with a potluck dinner, following a typically Roman tradition where everyone brings something to share at the table.
Those looking for the spectacle of the great historic carnivals will find something different here, and in some ways, rarer: a child-friendly, free event without barriers or tickets, where the true protagonist is the neighborhood. For those visiting Rome off the beaten tourist path, it is also an opportunity to see up close how the city's historic outskirts live, during a time of year when the capital is less crowded.
The Portuense Carnival Festival is part of a very rich Roman calendar: the Marconi Carnival Parade takes place in the same Municipality XI, while dozens of events are held throughout the Lazio Region, from the historic processions of the Castelli Romani to local neighborhood festivals in the capital. Dates vary each year based on the liturgical calendar, which places Carnival in the weeks preceding Lent.
On Saturday, February 7, 2026, the Portuense district celebrated Carnival with the traditional parade organized by the Sacra Famiglia Parish, at Via Filippo Tajani 10, in the Municipality XI of the City of Rome.
The masquerade procession departed at 4:30 PM and traveled through the streets of the district โ Via Tajani, Via Mengarini and Piazza Mengarini, Via Paleocapa, Piazza Cavalieri, Via Astolfi โ returning to the parish around 6:00 PM, led by the stilt walkers of the Artefatti company.
At the parish, the festivities continued with a snack for children, an aperitif for adults, and the magic show by Mago Pinko, before the potluck dinner that closed the day. The initiative, free and open to everyone, was supported by Municipality XI of Rome.
