Two evenings through the narrow streets of the village of Montefusco, in Irpinia
Porte Aperte al Borgo is the summer event where the Pro Loco of Montefusco invites residents and visitors to rediscover the historic center of the village, located in the province of Avellino, in the heart of inland Campania. For two consecutive evenings, the doors of the village are symbolically opened: alleys, stairways, courtyards, and squares become the natural stage for a widespread festival, enlivened by artists, entertainment, and food and wine stalls. The formula, repeated by the Pro Loco over the years, remains simple and effective: you walk, stop where you hear music, taste something, and continue on your way.
The strength of the event lies in the location itself. Montefusco stands on a ridge over seven hundred meters above sea level and preserves a medieval urban fabric made of narrow streets, arches, and sudden vistas. Porte Aperte al Borgo brings the public right there, into the corners that usually remain off the beaten path, with a visit that is both cultural and convivial.
Walking through Montefusco means crossing centuries of history. The town was long the capital of the Principato Ultra and still retains traces of that role today: noble palaces, churches, the castle area, and above all the famous Bourbon Prison, a symbolic place of the Southern Risorgimento. This heritage is complemented by artisan workshops that keep the tradition of bobbin lace and ceramics alive, crafts that have shaped the community's identity.
The food and wine component is a central part of the event. Montefusco is located in the area of Greco di Tufo DOCG, one of the most representative white wines of Campania, and the local cuisine draws from the Irpinian peasant pantry: homemade pasta, cured meats, cheeses, vegetables, and traditional desserts. The stalls set up along the route allow you to taste these specialties at your leisure, moving from one alley to the next.
The 2026 edition was included in the official calendar of Irpinian Pro Loco associations released by UNPLI Avellino, taking place on Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19, 2026. The event fell in a special year for the town: on July 1, 2026, Montefusco was awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club, a recognition given to small inland villages that invest in the quality of hospitality, care for heritage, and the enhancement of traditions. A recognition that gives even more meaning to an event created specifically to showcase the historic center.
Porte Aperte al Borgo is not an isolated episode: the Pro Loco Montefusco enlivens the town throughout the year with guided tours of monuments, itineraries in the historic village, nature trails, and wine-related experiences. The association's calendar also includes the Chestnut Festival in autumn and Calici al Borgo, an event dedicated to wine tasting. A continuous promotional effort that has helped make Montefusco one of the most recognizable destinations in Irpinia.
The event takes place in the evening, when the temperature on the ridge is more pleasant; a light sweater may be useful even in July. We recommend arriving calmly in the late afternoon, dedicating an hour to visiting the village in the daylight, and then letting yourself be guided by the music when the stalls open. Comfortable shoes are essential, as the route is almost entirely on cobblestones and slopes.
The dates for the 2026 edition were set for Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19, 2026, and appeared in the official calendar of Irpinian Pro Loco associations managed by UNPLI Avellino, which brings together summer events in the province of Avellino.
The event confirmed the established formula of the festival: the historic center of Montefusco opened to the public for two evenings, with entertainment provided by artists and food and wine stalls distributed along the cobblestone alleys of the village.
The 2026 edition arrived a few weeks after an important milestone for the community: on July 1, 2026, Montefusco obtained the Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club, bringing to seven the number of certified villages in Campania. A recognition that rewards the care of historical heritage, the craft of bobbin lace and ceramics, and the link with the territory's wine excellence, starting with the Greco di Tufo DOCG.
Montefusco (ZIP code 83030) is located on the hills between Avellino and Benevento, about twenty kilometers from both provincial capitals, along the SS 88 road. Traveling by car is the most convenient option: from the A16 motorway, continue towards Avellino and then in the direction of Benevento. The historic center is largely pedestrianized, so it is best to leave your car in the parking areas at the edge of the village and walk up.
The event takes place in the evening on the two scheduled days, with stalls and entertainment distributed along the alleys of the historic center.

Comfortable shoes for the cobblestones, a light sweater for the evening, and cash for the food and wine stalls. Those arriving in the afternoon can combine the visit with the Bourbon Prison and the village's panoramic viewpoints.
