The Passion of Christ takes center stage in the hills of Contrada Bura, in Tolentino
In the countryside of the Municipality of Tolentino, in the province of Macerata, there is a place that every spring becomes the stage for one of the most heartfelt religious re-enactments in the Marche: Contrada Bura. Here, during Holy Week, the Popular Sacred Representation of the Passion of Christ takes place, an itinerant performance that literally brings spectators to walk within the story.
This is not a fixed stage with an seated audience. Along a route of about 1.2 kilometers traced through the hills, spectators move together with the performers, stopping from scene to scene: from the entrance into Jerusalem to the Last Supper, from the trial before Pilate to the ascent to Calvary, culminating in the Crucifixion. The darkness of the evening, the lights, the sounds, and the rural landscape do the rest, transforming the hill into a grand natural theatre.
The roots of this event date back to the late sixties, when the parish priest Don Primo Minnoni chose the language of theatre to present the Passion to his parishioners. After a long interruption of about twenty years, the representation was revived in 2002 by members of the association named in honor of the priest, the Associazione Don Primo Minnoni 1967 APS, which still manages the entire organization today thanks to the voluntary work of the contrada's inhabitants.
The heart of the Passion at Bura lies in its narrator-performers: every year, over two hundred people (in some editions, more than two hundred and forty) interpret the characters of the Gospel story with intimate and personal involvement. For over twenty years, the direction has been entrusted to Ada Borgiani. It is an event that mobilizes an entire community, involving costumes, sets, and an organizational machine entirely based on volunteer work.
Over the years, the event has gained recognition that has extended beyond local borders: it has been presented in a hall of the Senate of the Republic and enjoys the patronage of the Municipality of Tolentino, the Mountain Union of the Blue Mountains, and the Regional Council of Marche, as part of a project to promote popular sacred representations.
What strikes attendees most about the Passion of Christ at Bura is the collective and popular dimension of the event. It is not a grand professional spectacle, but a choral re-enactment where faith, the tradition of village theatre, and the beauty of the Marche landscape merge. Over the years, the representation has drawn over a thousand spectators per edition, confirming itself as one of the most evocative events of Holy Week in the territory of Tolentino and the Blue Mountains.
The XXII edition of the Passion of Christ at Bura took place on Sunday, March 29, 2026, starting at 9:15 PM, in the countryside of Tolentino. The date originally planned was Saturday, March 28, but the event was postponed to the following day due to adverse weather conditions.
For this edition too, the direction was entrusted to Ada Borgiani, with Riccardo Tartuferi in the role of Jesus and over two hundred narrator-performers from the contrada. The representation, organized by the Associazione Don Primo Minnoni 1967 APS, confirmed its status as a major popular event, which had also been presented in a hall of the Senate of the Republic in the preceding weeks as part of the project to promote sacred representations.
The itinerant spectacle leads spectators from scene to scene along the stages of the Passion, from the arrest to the trial, from the ascent to Calvary to the Crucifixion. Concurrently, the CAI of San Severino Marche organized a night hike towards the Bura hills.
The edition was initially scheduled for Saturday, March 28, 2026, and was postponed to Sunday, March 29, due to bad weather.
The performance takes place in the hills of Contrada Bura, in the countryside of Tolentino (province of Macerata, Marche). The itinerant route is approximately 1.2 km long.
