The grand masquerade parade in the heart of the city of waters
The Popoli Terme Carnival is one of the most cherished winter events in this town in the province of Pescara, in the heart of Abruzzo. Known as the "city of waters" due to the numerous thermal springs surrounding it, Popoli Terme transforms for a day into a large open-air stage, where masks, colors, and music take over the historic center in a celebration that involves the entire community.
The highlight of the event is the grand parade, which kicks off from Piazza Paolini and brings the entire town route to life. Individual masks and themed groups, born from the imagination and hard work of adults, teenagers, and children, march along the streets. Elaborate costumes, choreography, and disguises bring a festive and engaging procession to life, accompanying participants through the town's squares.
The festival is marked by music and entertainment for all ages, with activities specifically dedicated to families and the little ones. The afternoon concludes with the highly anticipated awards ceremony for the most beautiful, original, and well-crafted costumes, a way to celebrate the effort and creativity of the participants.
The Popoli Terme Carnival is, above all, a celebration of participation: the presence of families, children, and adults filling the streets and squares is a sign of a vibrant and united community. In a small town with a rich historical past—boasting a medieval castle and ancient thermal springs—the Carnival represents a moment of gathering that transcends generations.
Located where the springs of the Pescara River rise, at the gateway to the Peligna Valley, the town of Popoli Terme combines thermal tradition, nature, and folk culture. The Carnival is part of a year-round calendar of events, which also features the grand summer historical re-enactment, the Certamen della Balestra. Experiencing the Carnival in Popoli Terme means discovering an authentic corner of Abruzzo filled with masks, colors, and hospitality.
The 2026 Popoli Terme Carnival took place on Monday, February 16, confirming itself as one of the most attended days of the town's winter season. The parade started from Piazza Paolini and came to life along the entire town route, with individual masks and themed groups creating a procession full of color, music, and imagination.
Entertainment was provided by Playzone Sulmona and a show by Huntrx, which accompanied the festivities until the long-awaited awards ceremony. Despite the uncertain weather, participation was described as record-breaking: a broad and diverse presence, a sign—as highlighted by the administration—of a vibrant and united community.
