About PIMS Organ Festival

Every spring, the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music hosts a festival dedicated to the organ, the quintessential liturgical instrument. Held at the Abbey Church of Sant'Anselmo on the Aventine Hill and the Institute's Academic Hall, the event features leading European organists who lead morning masterclasses for students followed by public evening concerts. An intimate, high-level gathering in the heart of Rome where musicological research meets performance practice.

A festival dedicated to the king of instruments

The Organ Festival is the spring showcase of the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music (PIMS), the pontifical university that has been training church musicians from around the world in Rome since 1911. Each year, the festival brings some of the most esteemed European organists and teachers to the capital. Throughout the day, they lead a morning masterclass, reserved for students but open to auditors, followed by a public evening concert.

Venues

The two venues are among the most evocative settings for sacred music in Rome. The Abbey Church of Sant'Anselmo on the Aventine Hill, located on the Aventine hill in Rome, houses an instrument perfectly suited to the liturgical and symphonic repertoire and is also famous for the Gregorian chant of the Benedictine monks. The Institute's Academic Hall, in Piazza Sant'Agostino, hosts concerts in a more chamber-music setting. Both are easily accessible from the historic center, making the festival an excellent opportunity for those visiting Rome in the spring.

Typical Program

The format is consistent and recognizable: three consecutive Fridays, three different performers, each with their own interpretation of the organ repertoire. Masterclasses generally begin at 10:00 AM, and concerts at 6:30 PM. The repertoire ranges from Renaissance polyphony and the great German and Italian Baroque to 19th-century French symphonic works and 20th-century pieces, with a special focus on composers linked to the liturgy.

  • Morning masterclass with the guest organist
  • Evening concert open to the public
  • Repertoire from the Renaissance to the 20th century
  • Free admission subject to availability

Why it's worth attending

Unlike large summer festivals, the PIMS Organ Festival retains an intimate, almost academic atmosphere: the audience is composed of students, musicians, clergy, and enthusiasts. It is not uncommon for the performer to introduce the pieces live. For those who love sacred music, it is one of the best opportunities in Italy to hear great organists in an authentic context—the very setting for which this music was written.

Rome and its organ tradition

The city is historically one of the centers of Western sacred music: from Vatican chapels to patriarchal basilicas, the organ has accompanied Roman liturgical life for centuries. Today, the PIMS, with its library and archives, is the primary scientific and educational hub for this tradition in the Lazio region. The festival is therefore a way to connect with this living tradition, in a spring-time Rome that offers numerous other musical events during the same period.

PIMS Organ Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music Organ Festival took place over three Fridays in May (the 8th, 15th, and 22nd) between the Abbey Church of Sant'Anselmo on the Aventine and the Institute's Academic Hall. Three prominent organists—Manuel Tomadin, Franz Josef Stoiber, and Johannes Kleinjung—led morning masterclasses and performed evening concerts open to the public.

Three Fridays in May

The 2026 Organ Festival followed its usual format: masterclass at 10:00 AM and concert at 6:30 PM on each of the three days. The festival was held at the Abbey Church of Sant'Anselmo on the Aventine, with some events in the Academic Hall of the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music.

The performers

On May 8th, the stage featured Manuel Tomadin, one of the most awarded Italian organists in the early music repertoire. On May 15th, Franz Josef Stoiber, organist of the Regensburg Cathedral and an internationally renowned teacher, performed. On May 22nd, the festival concluded with Johannes Kleinjung. Each concert was preceded in the morning by a masterclass held by the performer, a training session highly attended by the Institute's students.
