About Pofi Carnival

The Pofi Carnival is one of the most deeply rooted folk festivals in the Ciociaria region. Every year, during the Carnival season, the center of Pofi comes alive with allegorical floats, masquerade groups, confetti, and music. The parade winds through the town, culminating in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele with a lively costume party that brings together families, children, and visitors from across the Frosinone province.

A tradition that has defined Pofi for over half a century

Celebrating its 54th edition in 2026, the Pofi Carnival stands as one of the longest-running and most cherished events in the festive calendar of Pofi, a town in the province of Frosinone, nestled in the heart of the Ciociaria region in southern Lazio. Every year on Carnival Sunday, the village transforms into an explosion of color, sound, and joy: a collective ritual that unites residents and visitors alike, preserving its authentic village-festival spirit, defined by craftsmanship, self-deprecating humor, and conviviality.

The parade of allegorical floats

The highlight of the event is the parade of allegorical floats and masquerade groups, which kicks off in the early afternoon from Via Monsignor Capozi, in the area known to locals as Cancelletto. From there, the procession travels through the town streets toward the center, accompanied by music, confetti, and streamers.

The floats are crafted in the preceding months by local groups, working with papier-mâché, wood, and recycled materials. Satirical takes on current events, cartoon characters, and nods to popular Ciociarian culture line the route, while masquerade groups animate the parade with choreography and costumes prepared specifically for the occasion.

The town square party

Following the procession, the festivities continue in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, the hub of social life in Pofi, where a costume party with music and entertainment takes place. This is the moment children look forward to most, featuring informal awards for the most original costumes, plenty of confetti, and traditional Carnival sweets: frappe, castagnole, and other local delicacies that have always defined this time of year in Lazio.

Why it's worth a visit

  • Free admission to all parts of the event, including the parade and the square party.
  • An authentically local festival, built by the town's associations and groups, far removed from the commercial nature of large tourist carnivals.
  • An event designed for families, with spaces and timing suitable for even the youngest visitors.
  • The perfect opportunity to discover Pofi, a hilltop village perched between the Sacco Valley and the Lepini Mountains, also known for its Prehistoric Museum and the agricultural landscape of the Ciociaria.

Beyond February: the Summer Carnival

The winter event is now complemented by the Pofi Summer Carnival, which brings floats, masks, and music back to the streets on August evenings, following a route from the library square to Piazza Vittorio Emanuele. This format has expanded the festival's audience and serves as a testament to how deeply ingrained the Carnival tradition is in the town's identity.

The context: Carnival in Ciociaria

In southern Lazio, Carnival remains one of the most anticipated events of the year: dozens of towns in the Frosinone province organize parades, balls, and costume parties between February and March. Pofi's celebration stands out for its historical continuity and the strong involvement of the community, which every year restarts the organizational machine—driven primarily by volunteers, amateur artisans, and entire families working in the warehouses where the floats are born.
