About Pirola Parola

On Epiphany, Noale renews the ancient Panevin rite with Pirola Parola, the large propitiatory bonfire that illuminates the Rocca dei Tempesta. In Venetian tradition, the smoke and sparks of the fire are observed to draw the forecast for the new year. With a procession, Befane (witches), the folklore group, the lighting of the pyre by the Vate (Bard) and Marantega, the pyromusical show, and the charity lottery, it is a beloved popular festival for adults and children, organized by Pro Loco of Noale.

The Epiphany Bonfire in Noale

Pirola Parola is the traditional Epiphany bonfire in Noale, in the province of Venice. It is the local version of Panevin, the ancient propitiatory bonfire spread throughout the Veneto region, which in the hinterland of Venice is precisely called "Pirola Parola".

The Prognostication Rite

According to tradition, the forecast for the new year is drawn from the smoke and sparks of the large fire: the direction of the sparks indicates the trend of the harvests and the season. The pyre is lit in an atmosphere charged with magic by the Vate and the Marantega, symbolic figures of popular tradition.

A Festival for Everyone

The event opens with a procession from Piazza XX Settembre, enlivened by the districts' groups and the Befane, reaching the Rocca dei Tempesta. Here, after the bonfire is lit, a pyromusical show takes place. There is also a charity lottery and activities for children, making Pirola Parola one of the most cherished winter festivals in Noale.

Tradition and Community

Organized by Pro Loco of Noale, Pirola Parola is more than just a bonfire: it is a moment when the entire community gathers around the fire to welcome the new year, in the heart of a Veneto faithful to its peasant roots, just a few kilometers from Venice.
