The traditional Epiphany bonfire at Rocca dei Tempesta
Pirola Parola is the traditional Epiphany bonfire in Noale, in the province of Venice. It is the local version of Panevin, the ancient propitiatory bonfire spread throughout the Veneto region, which in the hinterland of Venice is precisely called "Pirola Parola".
According to tradition, the forecast for the new year is drawn from the smoke and sparks of the large fire: the direction of the sparks indicates the trend of the harvests and the season. The pyre is lit in an atmosphere charged with magic by the Vate and the Marantega, symbolic figures of popular tradition.
The event opens with a procession from Piazza XX Settembre, enlivened by the districts' groups and the Befane, reaching the Rocca dei Tempesta. Here, after the bonfire is lit, a pyromusical show takes place. There is also a charity lottery and activities for children, making Pirola Parola one of the most cherished winter festivals in Noale.
Organized by Pro Loco of Noale, Pirola Parola is more than just a bonfire: it is a moment when the entire community gathers around the fire to welcome the new year, in the heart of a Veneto faithful to its peasant roots, just a few kilometers from Venice.
The 2026 edition of Pirola Parola took place on Sunday, January 4 (with reserve for January 6) in Noale (VE), held earlier than the traditional Epiphany date.
The program included a gathering at 3:30 PM in Piazza XX Settembre with the districts' groups, the Vate, the Marantega, and the Pavullese folklore group from Modena, followed by games with the Befane in Piazza Castello and the procession to the Rocca dei Tempesta. Here, the Vate and Marantega (played by Luca Varretto and Nadia Libralato) lit the bonfire with the forecast for the year. The event concluded with a pyromusical show from the Rocca. Organized by Pro Loco of Noale.
