Sunday morning jazz in the neoclassical veranda of Villa Pignatelli, in Chiaia
Every spring, in the City of Naples, the Pignatelli in Jazz festival brings improvised music into one of the city's most elegant historic residences: Villa Pignatelli, home to the Diego Aragona Pignatelli Cortes Museum, overlooking the Riviera di Chiaia. The concerts are held on Sunday mornings at 11:30 AM in the neoclassical veranda, a cozy and luminous space that restores the intimate atmosphere of a 19th-century salon to jazz, far removed from large summer stages.
Pignatelli in Jazz is promoted by the Fondazione Franco Michele Napolitano, a Neapolitan non-profit organization that curates a concert season spanning Naples and Anacapri each year, featuring around sixty events divided between classical and jazz music in the city's art venues. The artistic direction is entrusted to singer Emilia Zamuner, who has guided its growth up to the eighth edition in 2026: from a small cycle of morning concerts, Pignatelli in Jazz has become one of the most anticipated events of the Neapolitan musical spring.
The formula has remained consistent over the years and explains much of the festival's success with the Neapolitan public:
The eighth edition, which took place on March 8, 15, 22, and 29, 2026, was entirely dedicated to women in jazz. A choice championed by the artistic director herself, who wanted a lineup built around the strength, sensitivity, and professionalism of female musicians. The stage featured the Emilia Zamuner Quartet with a tribute to Lucio Dalla, American vocalist Lauren Henderson with the Elio Coppola Trio, the Apulian vocal group Faraualla with their Mediterranean polyphonies, and the duo formed by Daniela Spalletta on vocals and Stefania Tallini on piano.
The venue is an integral part of the experience. Built in the first half of the 19th century and having passed through the hands of the Rothschilds and the Pignatelli Cortes family, the villa is now a state museum under the Direzione regionale Musei nazionali Campania, featuring period furniture, a library, an English-style garden, and the famous House of Photography. Nearby, the Chiaia district offers one of the most beautiful walks in Campania, between the Villa Comunale, the Caracciolo seafront, and the shopping streets: the jazz morning fits naturally into a Neapolitan Sunday made of seaside strolls, coffee, and lunch at a trattoria.
Pignatelli in Jazz does not aim for large numbers but for the quality of the listening experience. The limited capacity of the veranda, the cozy acoustics, the morning schedule, and the affordable price make it an event suitable for both enthusiasts and those approaching jazz for the first time. For those visiting Naples in March, it is also the most elegant way to enter a historic residence on the Riviera di Chiaia with live music accompanying the visit.
For the eighth edition, the festival promoted by the Fondazione Franco Michele Napolitano chose a clear artistic direction: four concerts entrusted to female musicians, to highlight the contribution of women to the history and present of jazz. Artistic director Emilia Zamuner explained that she wanted "a stage entirely dedicated to women," capable of showcasing the strength, sensitivity, and professionalism of the performers.
The four mornings were held on March 8, 15, 22, and 29, 2026, starting at 11:30 AM in the neoclassical veranda of the Villa Pignatelli museum. Each concert was preceded by a performance by young students from the "G. Martucci" Conservatory of Salerno and followed by a segment dedicated to reading recommendations curated by Polidoro Editore. The 12.50 euro ticket also included museum admission.
Emilia Zamuner Quartet - "Tribute to Lucio Dalla", with Enrico Valanzuolo (trumpet), Andre Ferreira (double bass), and Massimo Del Pezzo (drums).
Lauren Henderson with the Elio Coppola Trio: the American vocalist in a program ranging from standards to Latin repertoire.
Faraualla: the Apulian vocal group in a journey weaving ancestral vocals, anthropological research, and jazz improvisation.
Daniela Spalletta (vocals) and Stefania Tallini (piano) in a duo performance.
Each morning opened with a performance by young talents from the "G. Martucci" Conservatory of Salerno and closed with a section dedicated to reading recommendations curated by Polidoro Editore.
