Thirty years of culture in the Pescara village, in memory of Father Francesco D'Ostilio
The Pietranico Culture Day is one of the longest-running and most cherished cultural events in the province of Pescara. It takes place in the village of Pietranico, a small Abruzzese town perched among the hills that slope down toward the Pescara valley. Its heart is the Municipal Art Gallery in Piazza della Libertà, which houses the works collected over three decades of activity.
The event was founded in 1996 at the behest of Father Francesco D'Ostilio, a judge in the Church courts and a prominent figure in canon law, who was originally from Pietranico and deeply attached to his hometown. The first edition was inaugurated by a solemn celebration presided over by Cardinal Vincenzo Fagiolo, a testament to the prestige the initiative garnered from its inception. Since then, the Day has become a fixture on the local calendar, attracting scholars, clergy, and enthusiasts to Pietranico.
Over the years, the Culture Day has gathered valuable contributions in numerous fields of knowledge:
Many of the works donated to the community over time are now preserved in the Municipal Art Gallery, which represents the tangible heritage of this long cultural journey.
The Culture Day is made possible by the support of the Municipality of Pietranico and the active contribution of local associations, including the Gruppo Alpini, the Pro Loco, and the Archeoclub, as well as the spontaneous participation of the citizens. It is precisely this community dimension that makes the day not just a cultural event, but a moment of collective identity for the entire population of Pietranico.
Located in the province of Pescara, in the heart of Abruzzo, Pietranico is a village of a few hundred inhabitants that preserves a remarkable historical and landscape heritage, from the Oratory of Santa Maria della Croce to the characteristic rock-hewn wine presses. The Culture Day represents its intellectual soul, an opportunity to share the history and values of a small community that has chosen to invest in culture as an element of cohesion and memory.
The 30th Pietranico Culture Day was held on Monday, May 4, 2026, from 4:00 PM, at the Municipal Art Gallery in Piazza della Libertà. The 30th-anniversary edition held special significance, celebrating thirty years since the event's founding in 1996 and paying tribute to Father Francesco D'Ostilio, the creator of the initiative.
Following the institutional greetings from Mayor Francesco Del Biondo, the conference hosted interventions by Gaetano Lanfaloni, lawyer at the Apostolic Tribunal of the Roman Rota, Fra Maurizio Di Paolo, Procurator General of the Order, Don Maurizio Buzzelli, President of the Metropolitan Ecclesiastical Tribunal of Pescara, and Antonio Iaccarino, professor at the Faculty of Canon Law of the Pontifical Lateran University. The meeting was coordinated by Domenico D'Ostilio and Gino Berardi.
