Michettiano Festival

A festival dedicated to Francesco Paolo Michetti

The Michettiano Festival is a cultural event that the Municipality of Tocco da Casauria, in the province of Pescara, Abruzzo, dedicates to the memory and work of Francesco Paolo Michetti (1851-1929), the great painter, photographer, and artist born in this very village at the foot of the Morrone mountains, in the Pescara valley. The festival was established to promote the master's artistic legacy and to bring back to the heart of the town's cultural life the figure who made Tocco da Casauria a landmark of Abruzzo art between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Michetti, d'Annunzio and "The Daughter of Jorio"

The thematic core of the festival is the famous Michettiano cenacle, the circle of artists and intellectuals that revolved around the painter and his bond with Gabriele d'Annunzio. This partnership gave birth to fundamental works, first and foremost "The Daughter of Jorio", the masterpiece awarded at the Venice Biennale that combined Michetti's figurative imagery with d'Annunzio's tragedy. The festival editions retrace this intertwining of painting, poetry, and theatre through theatrical re-enactments, readings of d'Annunzio's works, and historical insights.

A programme of theatre, music, and culture

Throughout its editions, the Michettiano Festival has offered a calendar that blends multiple languages:

• Theatrical performances and recitals dedicated to Michetti, d'Annunzio, and Eleonora Duse, featuring national-level performers;
• Concerts and musical performances, often featuring incursions into great singer-songwriter music and the classical repertoire;

The events take place in the village's symbolic locations, from the Sala Michetti in the town hall to the Teatro Michetti, as well as the squares and courtyards of historic buildings like Palazzo Toro, in a widespread route that involves the entire historic centre.

The Michettiano Festival represents one of the highlights of the Tocco d'Estate programme, the calendar of events that brings Tocco da Casauria to life from June to September with music, theatre, sports, and popular traditions. The event, promoted by the municipal administration with the support of the Abruzzo Region, has established itself as one of the most anticipated cultural appointments of the summer in the Pescara area, attracting an ever-growing audience each year.
