About Pfingstranggeln Terenten

Every Whit Monday, the village of Terento in the Puster Valley (South Tyrol) hosts the traditional Pfingstranggeln, a competition of Ranggeln, the ancient Alpine wrestling style rooted in the farming culture of the Tyrolean valleys. In the village's Erholungspark, wrestlers of all ages—from children to master-class champions—compete for the prestigious Hoagmoar title. As part of the renowned Alpencup circuit, the event draws athletes from Salzburg, Tyrol, and South Tyrol for a day of sport, tradition, and conviviality, complete with polenta and local specialties.

Pfingstranggeln in Terenten: Ancient Alpine Wrestling in the Puster Valley

The Pfingstranggeln in Terenten is one of the most cherished traditional sporting events in South Tyrol. It takes place every year on Whit Monday (Pfingstmontag) at the Erholungspark, the recreational park in the municipality of Terento (Terenten), located in the Gitschberg-Jochtal region of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. The day blends sporting competition, folklore, and social gathering in a lush Alpine setting.

What is Ranggeln?

Ranggeln is one of the oldest forms of folk wrestling in the Alps, with centuries of documentation in the valleys of Tyrol and Salzburg. Two opponents, matched by age rather than weight class, face off in a test of strength and skill, aiming to force their rival to touch the ground with both shoulders. The wrestler who remains undefeated at the end of the bouts earns the coveted title of Hoagmoar (or Hagmoar), the champion of the day. This sport weaves together strength, technique, respect for one's opponent, and a deep connection to rural tradition.

A Stop on the Alpencup

The Pfingstranggeln in Terento is a stage of the international Alpencup, one of the most prestigious circuits in the discipline, featuring only a few select competitions each season. The event attracts wrestlers from across the Alpine region: clubs from Salzburg (Piesendorf, Bramberg, Mittersill, Leogang), Tyrol, and East Tyrol (such as Sportunion Matrei), alongside local South Tyrolean athletes.

Categories and Format

The matches begin around noon and are divided into numerous categories:

  • Youth categories for children and teenagers (up to 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 years old);
  • Master categories (Meisterklasse) for adult athletes;
  • The final challenge for the Hoagmoar title.

The competitions are held outdoors in the Erholungspark; in case of bad weather, the event is moved to the club hall.

Atmosphere and Gastronomy

Beyond the sporting spectacle, the Pfingstranggeln is a true village festival, featuring musical accompaniment and polenta served in various ways alongside local culinary specialties. It is the perfect opportunity to discover an authentic South Tyrolean tradition in a setting dedicated to sport and folk culture.
