The jazz and training review of the Conservatory of Fermo
The Pergolesi Jazz Festival is the event that transforms the G.B. Pergolesi State Conservatory of Music in Fermo into an open laboratory dedicated to jazz and musical training every spring. The initiative is promoted by the Conservatory's Department of New Technologies and Musical Languages, under the coordination of Maestro Mauro De Federicis, and brings renowned professors and musicians with recognized artistic and educational profiles to the heart of this Marche city.
Unlike many concert series, the Pergolesi Jazz Festival focuses on education: the program is built around seminars and masterclasses where students are not just spectators but active participants. Work is done on mutual listening, collective sound construction, improvisation, and contemporary jazz languages, with particular attention to the fusion of genres and musical cultures.
The days alternate instrument study, harmony, and rhythm with practical ensemble experiences. Topics covered in various editions include: the study of percussion and Afro-Cuban rhythms applied to jazz, classical, pop, and rock; South African jazz repertoire and lesser-known styles; stage management, communication, and stage presence; the sound, history, and languages of the big band, with hands-on practice alongside the Pergolesi Big Band.
The convivial heart of the festival are the evening jam sessions, hosted at Beor Brasserie in Fermo, where Conservatory students can get on stage and play with professors and guests. These are open and informal moments where the theory from the masterclasses becomes live music, and where the city's public can soak up the atmosphere of live jazz.
The Pergolesi Jazz Festival represents one of the flagship events of the Fermo Conservatory's activities and helps make the provincial capital of Fermo a reference point for music in the Marche region. The festival combines high-level training, dissemination, and performance, offering students, enthusiasts, and the curious an opportunity to approach jazz through those who teach and play it every day.
The fourth edition of the Pergolesi Jazz Festival offered an intensive training program including seminars, masterclasses, and jam sessions. On March 24 and 25, Roberto Gatti led the seminar Amanolibera, dedicated to percussion and Afro-Cuban rhythms applied to jazz, classical music, pop, and rock. On March 26, Mike Rossi presented the masterclass Roots & routes, focusing on South African jazz repertoire, and Domenico Pulsinelli conducted the seminar Il palco come strumento (The Stage as an Instrument), dedicated to stage presence and communication. The festival concluded on March 27 with Massimo Morganti's seminar Big Band: sound, history, and languages, featuring hands-on practice alongside the Pergolesi Big Band.
The festival is held at the G.B. Pergolesi State Conservatory of Music in Fermo (Marche). Evening jam sessions take place at Beor Brasserie, in the Santa Caterina area.
By car: take the Porto San Giorgio-Fermo exit from the A14 motorway, then the dual carriageway towards Fermo. By train: Porto San Giorgio-Fermo station on the Adriatic line, connected to the center by bus. Nearest airport: Ancona-Falconara.
Participation in seminars is free for Conservatory students; an enrollment fee is required for external auditors (30 euros in the 2026 edition). For information and registration details, consult the website www.conservatorio.net.
