The votive festival of Muzzana del Turgnano, between faith, historical memory, and community
The PerDonut Festival in Muzzana del Turgnano has its roots in a dramatic chapter of local history. On March 12, 1944, in the midst of World War II, the community made a vow to the Madonna to invoke the end of hostilities and the protection of their territory. Since then, the Perdonut – "perdono" (pardon), linked to the indulgence granted to the faithful – has become the annual event that renews that promise, uniting devotion and town identity.
The event weaves together multiple aspects. There is the religious dimension, with the procession and celebrations promoted by the parish of San Vitale. There is the cultural dimension, with a photographic exhibition hosted at Villa Muciana dedicated to Friuli marked by the 1976 earthquake, testifying to the community's historical memory. And there is the celebration, with music and convivial moments animating the Parco degli Orbi.
The recent edition is organized by the Class of 1976 of Muzzana together with the Municipality, the Spazio Zero 18 Association, and the parish of San Vitale: a "generational bridge" that links those born in 1976 – the very year of the earthquake – to the memory of the territory. This is how the PerDonut becomes much more than a commemoration: an opportunity to strengthen the bonds of the community of the Municipality of Muzzana del Turgnano (Province of Udine), in the Bassa friulana region.
The 2026 PerDonut Festival returns from April 23rd to 26th in Muzzana del Turgnano, renewing the ancient votive festival born from the vow to the Madonna in 1944. The event, organized by the Class of 1976 with the Municipality, the Spazio Zero 18 Association, and the parish of San Vitale, combines faith, music, and historical memory: from the religious procession to the photographic exhibition dedicated to the Friuli earthquake, to the convivial and musical moments at Parco degli Orbi.
The detailed program for the 2026 PerDonut Festival (April 23-26) will be finalized by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event. Confirmed traditional elements include:
