The oldest festival in Castel Bolognese, since 1631: five days of tradition, Romagna flavors, and great concerts
The Pentecost Festival in Castel Bolognese, a small town in the province of Ravenna in Emilia-Romagna, is much more than a simple village festival: it's an event rooted in 1631, when the Castel Bolognese community made a vow to the Madonna dell'Immacolata Concezione to be spared from the terrible plague epidemic. From that vow, one of Romagna's longest-running popular traditions was born, celebrated uninterruptedly for almost four centuries, uniting devotion, village identity, and a grand collective celebration.
For five days, the historic center and Piazza Bernardi become the stage for a packed program designed for all ages. The most anticipated moment is the evocative parade of floats from the seven parishes, accompanied by the re-enactment of ancient crafts, traditional bands, and the Fruste di Romagna (Romagna whips), filling the village streets with color, music, and peasant memories. Alongside the folkloric elements, there are artisan markets, art exhibitions, displays of vintage agricultural machinery, activities for children and young people, sports events, and the unmissable funfair.
The culinary heart of the Festival is the gastronomic stand, where you can savor the best of Romagna's traditional dishes: the absolute stars are the handmade cappelletti, prepared with quality local ingredients, alongside fresh pasta, grilled meats, and local wines. It's an opportunity to experience the authentic conviviality of Romagna, with shared tables, conversation, and good food.
In recent years, the Festival has elevated its musical offerings, bringing nationally renowned artists to Castel Bolognese. The event traditionally concludes with the drawing of the grand tombola (bingo), with a prize pool of 5,000 euros in shopping vouchers, followed by the final concert. The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Castel Bolognese, with the patronage of the Municipality and the Emilia-Romagna Region, and is entirely free to enter.
The 2026 edition of the Pentecost Festival celebrated a double milestone: the 395th edition of the festival and the 60th anniversary of the Pro Loco of Castel Bolognese, in the province of Ravenna. For five days, from May 21 to 25, the historic center and Piazza Bernardi hosted gastronomic stands with traditional Romagna dishes, the parade of floats from the seven parishes, markets, exhibitions, a funfair, and a rich program of events for families and young people. The musical program reached its peak with the concert by the Mirko Casadei POPular Folk Orchestra and the grand finale by Alan Sorrenti, preceded by the drawing of the traditional tombola with a 5,000 euro prize pool.
