About Farmer's Festival

Nestled in the hills on the slopes of Mount Etna, the hamlet of Pennisi (Acireale) celebrates its Farmer's Festival every September: two weekends dedicated to the region's agricultural roots. Experience grape crushing in the square, handmade pasta prepared by local women, grilled sausage, grape mustard, mulled wine, and mustazzoli, all accompanied by folk music and dancing. An authentic, free-entry event that pays tribute to the farmers of yesterday and today, the guardians of the hamlet's identity.

A festival that tells the story of the land of Pennisi

The Farmer's Festival takes place in Pennisi, a small hillside hamlet in the municipality of Acireale, in the province of Catania, just a few kilometers from the baroque city center and the slopes of Mount Etna. Established in 2011 by the Per Pennisi Civic Committee, the event has become one of the most cherished appointments in the Acireale September calendar: a journey into the agricultural culture and traditions of a village that has made working the land its true identity.

Grape crushing and rural flavors

The heart of the festival is the grape crushing in the square, an ancient ritual that draws curious visitors and families every year. Alongside the crushing, local women prepare traditional products live: grape mustard, mulled wine, ricotta, and mustazzoli, the typical grape-must cookies. The food stalls offer the true farmer's dinner: handmade macaroni with tomato sauce or alla Norma, grilled sausage, seasoned bread, and local fruit.

Crafts, music, and traditions

  • Exhibitions of ancient farming tools and local agricultural products
  • Artisan stalls and traditional crafts
  • Folk music and dance evenings with folkloric performances
  • Children's entertainment and traditional games
  • Tastings of traditional rural dishes

A tribute to the farmers of yesterday and today

More than just a festival, the Farmer's Festival is a tribute to those who have safeguarded the territory and identity of Pennisi generation after generation. For two weekends, the hamlet's square transforms into a place of sharing where past and present meet, in a genuine and festive atmosphere that tells the story of the most authentic rural Sicily, that of the Acireale hills overlooking the sea and Mount Etna.
