A journey into peasant and artisan civilization

The Peasant and Artisan Civilization Festival, also known as the "Journey into Peasant and Artisan Civilization," is one of the most cherished events of the summer in Acquapendente, a village in the Tuscia viterbese area, located in the province of Viterbo in northern Lazio. For four days, usually in the second half of August, the historic center transforms into a large open-air museum dedicated to the memory of the rural world and the trades of yesteryear.

The event is promoted by the Municipality of Acquapendente in collaboration with the Pro Loco and a committee of local volunteers and associations, who each year reconstruct the environments, customs, and atmosphere of the peasant and artisan life of the Tuscia region throughout the town's streets and squares.

Re-enactments of life in the past

The heart of the festival lies in its re-enactments: scenes of rural life, ancient crafts performed live, agricultural work, traditional games, and moments of daily rural life reconstructed with philological care. There is no shortage of traditional performances, such as the peasant wedding, costumed processions, and evening gatherings in the threshing floor, which enliven the nights with folk music, singing, and dancing.

Local associations and folk groups guide visitors along a path that crosses through the ages, amidst reconstructed barns, artisan workshops, and corners dedicated to the tools and objects of peasant civilization.

Crafts, exhibitions, and flavors of the Tuscia

Along the streets of the historic center, you will find artisan markets featuring creations by master craftsmen and local ingenuity. There is also space for exhibitions set up in city spaces, which tell the story and traditions of the village.

The food stalls are one of the most anticipated highlights: they offer the chance to taste traditional dishes and local products, from the genuine flavors of peasant cuisine to the specialties of the Tuscia viterbese, in a festive and convivial atmosphere that brings together residents and visitors alike.
