The challenge between the districts with wheelbarrows in the hamlet of Cantù
The hamlet of Vighizzolo, part of the Municipality of Cantù in the province of Como, dedicates its patronal feast to Saints Peter and Paul every year at the end of June. It is one of those village festivals where the religious and popular dimensions are inextricably intertwined, organized by the Parish of SS. Pietro e Paolo and capable of mobilizing the entire community.
The heart of the feast is the Palio dei Rioni, a traditional competition that sees the four historic districts of the hamlet — Terrò, Doss, Strepaée, and Filanda — compete. The race is run using wheelbarrows, which carry the symbols of each district's working past: spools of thread, skeins, sieves, pots, recalling Vighizzolo's ancient artisan and farming vocation. The parade that precedes the race, with the "Giuseppe Verdi" musical band and flag-wavers, starts from the church of SS. Pietro e Paolo and winds through the streets of the hamlet.
The feast is not just about the Palio: the program includes exhibitions, music, evening entertainment, and gastronomic offerings, alternating moments of devotion with more carefree ones. It is this blend of the sacred and the profane, of memory and celebration, that makes Vighizzolo's patronal feast an eagerly awaited event not only by the hamlet's residents but by all of Cantù, fully included in the Cantù Summer calendar.
The 2026 edition of the patronal feast of Vighizzolo, part of the Cantù Summer calendar, takes place on the weekend of June 28 and 29 with the 34th Palio dei Rioni.
Saturday, June 28 is dedicated to entertainment, with a vintage motorcycle exhibition, DJ set, and silent disco. Sunday, June 29 is the day of the Palio: at 7:30 PM the parade starts from the church of SS. Pietro e Paolo, followed by the competition between the four districts — Terrò, Doss, Strepaée, and Filanda — in a wheelbarrow race.
The 34th Palio dei Rioni on Sunday, with the parade and the wheelbarrow race between Terrò, Doss, Strepaée, and Filanda.
