A neighborhood festival in the heart of Pietralata

The Patronal Feast of the Parish of Sant'Atanasio is one of the most anticipated spring events in the Pietralata neighborhood, located in Municipio IV of Rome, Lazio. For a few days, Via Achille Benedetti and the streets surrounding the church transform: stalls line the sidewalks, fairground rides set up their colorful structures, and the parish becomes the gravitational center of a part of the city that, for the rest of the year, is defined by the daily rhythm of the suburbs.

Sant'Atanasio, the patron saint

The parish is dedicated to Saint Athanasius of Alexandria, a 4th-century bishop and Doctor of the Church, whose liturgical feast day falls on May 2nd. The festival calendar is traditionally built around this date, with celebrations concentrated in late April and early May. The community is relatively young: the parish was established in 1961 by decree of Cardinal Vicar Clemente Micara, while the current church was built between 1967 and 1969 based on a design by architect Ernesto Vichi, featuring a basilica layout supported by iron pillars and four stained-glass windows dedicated to Eucharistic symbols, Saint Athanasius, and the dove of the Holy Spirit.

The parish is also known for another initiative, distinct from the patronal feast but born from the same environment: the Palio di Sant'Atanasio, a medieval-style historical re-enactment active since 1982, which features a competition between seven parish districts and takes place later in May.
