The neighborhood festival of Casal de' Pazzi celebrating its patron saint
The Patronal Feast of Santa Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi is the most anticipated event of the year for the Casal de' Pazzi neighborhood, located in the Ponte Mammolo area on the northeastern outskirts of Rome, in Lazio. This is not a grand tourist festival, but a grassroots celebration built by parishioners, which for a few days transforms the square of Largo Fausto Vicarelli and the surrounding streets into a shared space for prayer, connection, and joy.
Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi was a 16th-century Carmelite nun and mystic from Florence, whose liturgical feast day falls on May 25th. The parish community builds its annual festival calendar around this date. The coincidence of the saint's name with the historic name of the neighborhood—Casal de' Pazzi—has made the bond even stronger: here, the patron is not just a figure on the calendar, but a symbol of the neighborhood's identity.
The parish was established on July 1st, 1976, by Cardinal Vicar Ugo Poletti under the decree Neminem sane. The current church, designed by architects Carlo and Anna Maria Bevilacqua, was built in the early 1980s and consecrated on October 22nd, 1983. On March 15th, 1987, it received a visit from Pope John Paul II, an event the neighborhood still cherishes. Despite being a modern building, the church on Via Giovanni Zanardini has become, in just a few decades, the true social gravity center of a neighborhood born from Rome's urban expansion.
The program varies from year to year but follows a recognizable structure, announced by the poster the parish publishes on its website and social media channels in the weeks prior. Recurring elements include:
Those looking for the "real" Rome—the one that doesn't appear in guidebooks—will find an authentic example here. The Casal de' Pazzi patronal feast has no spectacular ambitions; it holds the value of both a civil and religious rite that keeps a suburban community united and renews itself every May. It is also the perfect opportunity to discover a lesser-known corner of the Capital, just a few steps from the famous paleontological site of the Museo di Casal de' Pazzi, one of the most important in Europe for the Pleistocene era.
Although it began as a parish feast, the event is open to anyone who wishes to participate: residents, families, and curious visitors. Participation in liturgical moments and community gatherings is free. To learn about the detailed program for the current edition, it is always best to check the parish website or contact the office directly.
In 2026, the community of Casal de' Pazzi in Rome celebrated its patronal feast around May 25th, the liturgical memorial of its patron saint. The parish announced the edition with a dedicated poster, inviting the neighborhood to consult the full program.
The path leading up to the feast began on May 6th with the Holy Rosary through the streets of the neighborhood, an itinerant prayer that brings the community out of the church and into the district every year. On May 23rd, the solemn Pentecost vigil was held, one of the most attended liturgical moments of the year. The heart of the feast fell on the saint's day, with solemn celebrations in the church of Largo Fausto Vicarelli.
Closing the cycle, the "Portami a Casa" 2026 Raffle: the winning numbers were published by the parish on June 8th, 2026, to benefit the parish's charitable activities.
