About Andria Patronal Feast

Every September, Andria, in the heart of the Barletta-Andria-Trani province, honors its patron saints, San Riccardo and the Madonna dei Miracoli, with its most significant annual festival. Over three intense days, religious devotion meets folklore: solemn processions carrying the patron statues through the historic center, concerts and shows in Piazza Catuma, artistic illuminations, brass bands, a funfair, street performers, and traditional fireworks. A defining event that unites the entire Apulian city.

Andria's most cherished celebration

The Patronal Feast of San Riccardo and the Madonna dei Miracoli is the highlight of the calendar in Andria, a city in the Barletta-Andria-Trani province, Apulia. Each year, in the second half of September, the entire community gathers around its two patrons in a celebration that weaves religious tradition with popular folklore, drawing thousands of locals and visitors from neighboring towns.

The Patron Saints

According to tradition, San Riccardo was an English bishop who led the diocese of Andria, dedicating himself to the Christian education of the people and the renewal of church life. His relics, identified in 1438, are kept in the Cathedral of Andria, and he has been venerated as the city's patron ever since. His liturgical feast falls on June 9th, while the major popular festival with processions takes place in September, alongside the veneration of the Madonna dei Miracoli, whose sanctuary just outside the city center is a site of deep Marian devotion.

Religious Rites and Processions

The spiritual heart of the festival lies in the solemn processions, where the statues of the patron saints are carried on shoulders through the historic center amidst the faithful. The parade winds through the main squares and streets, from Piazza San Pio X to Piazza Duomo, accompanied by church bells and brass bands. Liturgical celebrations in the Cathedral mark the days of the festival.

Entertainment, Music, and Tradition

Alongside the religious rites, the folklore program organized by the Patronal Feast Committee brings the city's streets and squares to life with a packed schedule:

  • Evening concerts and shows in Piazza Catuma, featuring popular Italian music and comedy artists;
  • Stunning artistic illuminations lighting up the historic center;
  • Morning brass band performances and roving entertainment;
  • Street performers appearing throughout the city;
  • A funfair with rides for all ages;
  • Traditional fireworks to close the festivities in style.

A Heritage of Civic Identity

The Patronal Feast is much more than a religious recurrence: it is a moment of strong collective identity where Andria rediscovers its roots and the values of brotherhood and community tied to San Riccardo. Between the sacred and the profane, devotion and joy, the September festival remains the most anticipated event of the year for the capital of the northern Bari area.
