The Patronal Feast of Ardea

The Patronal Feast of Saints Peter and Paul is the most significant event in the civil and religious calendar of Ardea, a town in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. Every year, around June 29th, the Ardea community gathers around its patron saint, Saint Peter the Apostle, in a festival that blends devotion, popular tradition, and conviviality in the heart of the historic center.

Where it takes place

The focal point of the festivities is the Church of San Pietro Apostolo, overlooking Piazza Sforza Cesarini, in the old town of Ardea which overlooks the coast south of Rome. The streets and squares of the historic center host the civil events, while the archaeological itinerary and city monuments are often opened for guided tours, offering visitors the chance to discover the ancient Ardea of the Rutuli, one of the oldest cities in Lazio.

A program between faith and tradition

The festival begins in the days leading up to June 29th with the inauguration of the flower festival (infiorata), organized by the Pro Loco of Ardea: carpets of colorful petals decorate the churchyard and the streets of the village. During the festival days, Eucharistic celebrations take place in the patronal church, culminating in the solemn mass on June 29th and the procession that winds through the streets of the historic center with the statue of the saint.

Culture and community

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival promotes the associative and cultural life of Ardea. Over the years, the Pro Loco has promoted the international extemporaneous painting exhibition dedicated to Giacomo Manzù, the great sculptor who left a deep mark on Ardea with his art collection. The streets of the village come alive with exhibitors, popular games, and convivial moments that involve families and visitors.

As in every patronal feast in Lazio, gastronomy plays a leading role: the stalls set up by volunteers and residents offer dishes of Lazio cuisine and specialties prepared for the occasion, to be enjoyed in the square amidst music and cheer.
