About Saint Vincent Feast

Every year on January 21st and 22nd, Ugento celebrates its patron saint, Saint Vincent the Deacon and Martyr, who is also the protector of the entire Diocese of Ugento-Santa Maria di Leuca. The festival blends liturgical solemnity with the folk traditions of Salento: the arrival of the saint on horseback, the preparatory novena, the solemn procession of the wooden bust through the historic center with all the confraternities, the pontifical mass in the Cathedral, the illuminations, brass band concerts, the market, and the fireworks display that concludes the festivities.

The patron saint of Ugento and the Diocese

The Patronal Feast of Saint Vincent the Martyr is the most deeply felt religious and civil event in Ugento, a town in lower Salento in the province of Lecce, Puglia. Saint Vincent, a deacon from Zaragoza martyred in the early 4th century during the persecution of Diocletian, is venerated as the patron saint not only of the town but of the entire Diocese of Ugento-Santa Maria di Leuca. The cult in Ugento is ancient: the first records date back to 1283, when a chapel was erected with the saint's effigy, and to a Greek document from 1292 preserved in the diocesan archives.

When it is celebrated

The festivities are concentrated every year around January 21st and 22nd, the date the liturgical calendar dedicates to Saint Vincent. The celebration is preceded by a preparatory novena during which the various entities of the Diocese—parishes, confraternities, lay associations, and youth groups—take turns in prayer at the Cathedral.

Rites and traditions

The most characteristic moment is the arrival of the saint on horseback on the eve of the feast: a rider reaches the Cathedral accompanied by the reading of the martyr's passio, evoking the ancient bond between the cult and the community. On January 22nd, the day of the solemnity, morning masses are held, followed in the afternoon by the solemn procession of the saint's wooden bust—crafted in 1796—through the streets of the town, with the participation of all the diocesan confraternities. The day culminates in the pontifical mass presided over by the Bishop in the Cathedral, the heart of Ugento's historic center.

The civil festival

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival preserves all the elements of Salento's folk tradition. Luminarie (ornate light displays) illuminate the streets of the historic center, a market of stalls winds through the narrow alleys, while brass band concerts and musical performances enliven the squares. The festivities traditionally conclude with a fireworks display that colors the sky of Ugento.

A patron saint linked to the land

Saint Vincent is traditionally invoked as the protector of winemakers and vineyard workers, a patronage that intertwines well with the agricultural vocation of the Salento territory. During the festival, the community pays special attention to the world of vines and wine, reflecting the peasant identity of this part of Puglia.

Why attend

Experiencing the Feast of Saint Vincent means immersing yourself in the authenticity of a Southern Italian patronal festival, where faith, history, and conviviality merge in the evocative setting of Ugento's historic center, just a few kilometers from the Ionian beaches and Santa Maria di Leuca.
