The patronal feast of the pastoral village of Castel del Monte, perched above the Gran Sasso
The Feast of Saint Donatus the Martyr is the most cherished summer event in Castel del Monte, a stunning medieval village in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo. Every year, on August 6th and 7th, the community honors Saint Donatus, bishop and martyr, the town's patron saint, with two days blending faith, tradition, and conviviality. Religious services draw a large crowd, including residents, returning emigrants, and tourists captivated by the charm of the village.
Carved into stone on the slopes of Monte Bolza, at an altitude of over 1,300 meters and overlooking the Campo Imperatore plateau, Castel del Monte is one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and has been considered the "capital of shepherds" for centuries. Its identity is deeply rooted in transhumance and shepherding: since ancient times, flocks would depart from here toward the pastures of Puglia along the sheep tracks, returning in the summer. This heritage is still palpable today in the village festivals that mark the rhythm of the pastoral seasons.
The heart of the festival is the solemn Mass celebrated in the Church of San Donato, followed by the procession with the statue of the saint, which winds through the alleys and small squares of the historic center, accompanied by sacred music and the hymns of the faithful. The interplay of lights, sounds, and the natural backdrop of the medieval village makes these moments particularly evocative, honoring ancient customs passed down through generations.
Alongside religious celebrations, the festival comes alive with entertainment designed to involve the entire community and visitors. Evenings ignite with musical performances, folk groups, and local bands, while the village streets host artisanal stalls and markets. Not to be missed are the food stalls featuring specialties of the L'Aquila Apennines:
The festival is also the perfect opportunity to visit Castel del Monte and its surroundings, exploring the alleys, the "sporti" (covered passages), and ancient stone houses, with views sweeping across the Campo Imperatore plateau and the peaks of the Gran Sasso. During the same weeks, the village calendar features other events linked to shepherding and traditions, such as the Campo Imperatore Sheep Exhibition and the famous Night of the Witches, completing a summer full of events in the heart of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park.
For 2026, Castel del Monte renews its appointment with the patronal feast of Saint Donatus the Martyr, scheduled for August 6th and 7th. The days will feature traditional religious rites, including the solemn Mass and the procession of the saint's statue through the village alleys, as well as evening festivities with live music, folk groups, and the essential food stalls. The detailed schedule of times and performances will be released by the Municipality of Castel del Monte closer to the event.
By car: from L'Aquila, you can reach Castel del Monte in about an hour by following the roads that climb toward the Campo Imperatore plateau. The nearest train station is in L'Aquila, from where you can continue by car or local transport.
The patronal feast traditionally takes place on August 6th and 7th every year.
Religious events and public celebrations are free and open to everyone.
The village is located at an altitude of over 1,300 meters: even in mid-summer, evenings can be cool, so we recommend bringing a warmer layer. Seating in the historic center is limited.
