The patronal feast of San Pietro Vernotico, blending faith, tradition, and the historic Matthra
The Patronal Feast of Saint Peter the Apostle is the most anticipated event of the year in San Pietro Vernotico, a town in the Province of Brindisi, Apulia, in the heart of northern Salento. For about twelve days, between June 19th and 30th, the town transforms into a great collective embrace around its patron saint, whose liturgical day falls on June 29th, the feast of Saints Peter and Paul.
The religious heart of the festival is managed by the Parish of Saint Peter the Apostle and the Confraternity of Saints Peter and Paul. It all begins with the evocative transfer of the statue of the Saint, a fine 18th-century simulacrum, from the Mother Church to the church dedicated to him. This is followed by days of novenas, rosaries, and holy masses, culminating in the solemn Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Archbishop and the procession that winds through the main streets of the center, with the statue carried on shoulders and accompanied by local musical associations.
Among the most iconic rituals is the "Matthra", a moment of great popular participation organized by the Confraternity: in front of the church, gnocchi with mussels are distributed for freeโa dish that symbolizes sharing, flavor, and community memory. Other highlights include the traditional sawdust carpet on the church square, the Flag Parade through the town streets, and the competition for the best-decorated street, which rewards the most creative neighborhoods.
The civic side of the festival is packed with events: prestigious brass band concerts in Piazza del Popolo, the famous musical light displays, the Street Market along the town roads, food and wine trails, and spectacular fireworks. The festivities conclude with a final night of music and entertainment, featuring national guests who enliven the main square until late at night.
Organized by the Patronal Feast Committee with the support of the Municipality of San Pietro Vernotico, the festival combines its spiritual dimension with a strong spirit of solidarity, including food drives for Caritas. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the authentic soul of a Salento village, amidst centuries-old devotion, local flavors, and the warmth of its people.
The 2026 Patronal Feast brought San Pietro Vernotico to life from June 19th to 30th, confirming the successful formula that combines religious solemnity and popular celebration. After the transfer of the Saint's statue and the days of the novena, the program came to life with the Matthra, the solemn procession, and the major musical evenings in Piazza del Popolo, concluding with a final show that drew citizens and visitors from across the Brindisi Salento area.
The celebrations take place in the center of San Pietro Vernotico (BR): Mother Church, Church of Saint Peter the Apostle, Piazza del Popolo, and the main streets of the town. The Street Market is held along Via Pier Giovanni Rizzo and neighboring roads.
San Pietro Vernotico is located along the SS16 road between Brindisi and Lecce. It is served by the train station on the Adriatic line (regional stops Brindisi-Lecce). The nearest airports are Brindisi-Casale (about 15 km) and Bari-Palese.
Access to all religious and civic events, concerts, and the Matthra is free.
The highlights are the procession on June 28th, the Matthra on June 27th, and the final evening on June 30th in Piazza del Popolo. It is recommended to arrive early for the evening concerts.
