Devotion, processions, and winter flavors in the village of Cervati

In Piaggine, a mountain village in the province of Salerno, Campania, December 6th is the most significant date of the year. It is the day of Saint Nicholas of Bari, the community's patron and a beloved figure known for his generosity, celebrated with a feast that weaves together religious devotion and village conviviality. The town, nestled in the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, gathers around its mother church, dedicated to the saint and built in the 16th century, for a day that symbolically marks the arrival of winter.
The day begins with the Solemn Holy Mass, celebrated in the parish church of Saint Nicholas of Bari. This is followed by a procession along the streets of the historic center: the statue of the saint is carried on the shoulders of the faithful in an atmosphere of prayer and reflection, accompanied by the entire community. It is the most defining moment of the feast, where the stone village, with its courtyards, wells, and votive chapels, becomes the natural stage for a ritual passed down through generations.
Alongside the liturgical events, there are folk and musical initiatives that involve the whole town. The squares come alive in the afternoon and evening with live entertainment and opportunities for gathering: a village-scale celebration where those who have returned from the cities and those visiting from abroad reconnect with friends and family. The detailed program is usually released by the parish and the Municipality close to the date, so it is always advisable to check the official channels for times.
An important chapter of the feast is the gastronomic one. The stalls set up in the squares offer typical dishes of the cold season from the Cilento hinterland:
With just over 1,500 inhabitants at an altitude of 630 meters, Piaggine stretches along the valley of the Calore River, dominated to the south by Mount Cervati (1,898 meters), the highest peak in Campania. The town was founded around the 12th century as a hamlet of the state of Laurino, near a ford of the Calore and a Benedictine monastery. In addition to the church of Saint Nicholas, it preserves the Capuchin convent (1615), the church of Saint Peter, and, on the mountain, the rock sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve. The multimedia museum "Chiainari nel mondo" tells the story of local emigration, while the natural waterfall of the Calore and the medieval bridge remain among the most beloved destinations in the area.
The cult of Saint Nicholas is deeply rooted throughout Cilento: from Novi Velia to Campora, from Prignano Cilento to Rofrano, many communities venerate him as their protector. In Piaggine, however, the devotion has a unique feature: on Easter Monday, a sacred representation is held that retraces the moments of the saint's life, testifying to a bond that goes beyond the liturgical recurrence in December.
Those who arrive for the patronal feast find the town in its winter attire, ideal for those seeking the authenticity of the Upper Calore villages far from the tourist season. The local calendar continues in summer with the feast of the Madonna delle Grazie (July 2nd), the Madonna del Carmine (July 15-16), the Madonna della Neve on Mount Cervati (August 4-5), and the celebrations for Saint Philomena (August 21-24), confirming a community that marks the year with its devotions.
For 2026, neither the official calendar nor the program for the Patronal Feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari in Piaggine, located in the Cilento National Park (province of Salerno, Campania), has been released. The patronal feast is linked to the liturgical recurrence of December 6th, but celebration times, any musical events, and the setup of food stalls are only announced close to the event.
Those wishing to attend can follow updates from the Saint Nicholas of Bari parish in Piaggine and the Municipality of Piaggine, which usually publish the poster in the days leading up to the event. This page will be updated as soon as official dates and the program are available.
Piaggine is located in the mountain hinterland of Cilento, in the province of Salerno. The town can be reached by car along the provincial roads of the Upper Calore; the most convenient references are the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway and the railway stations on the Cilento coast, from which the final stretch must still be traveled by road. In December, it is advisable to check weather conditions: the town is at an altitude of 630 meters, so dress accordingly.
The procession and festivities take place in the historic center, which is best explored on foot: it is best to leave your car in the available spaces at the entrance to the village and continue through the alleys.
Municipality of Piaggine — Piazza Umberto I n. 9, 84065 Piaggine (SA) — tel. +39 0974 942014 — [email protected]. For celebration times, the reference is the Saint Nicholas of Bari parish in Piaggine.
Participation in religious celebrations and festivities in the historic center is free; tastings at food stalls are pay-as-you-go.
