The patron saint of Lagonegro celebrated on the last Sunday of May
In Lagonegro, an important center in the province of Potenza overlooking the southern slope of the Lucanian Apennines, the Patronal Feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari is the most cherished religious event of the year. The cult of the saint bishop of Myra, one of the most venerated in Southern Italy, links Lagonegro to the great devotional tradition that radiates from Bari throughout Basilicata and Puglia. The feast is celebrated every year on the last Sunday of May.
The heart of the festivities is the procession of Saint Nicholas's statue through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the musical band and the participation of the faithful. Alongside the religious rites, illuminations, concerts, shows, and stalls animate the village, attracting residents and emigrants who return for the occasion.
Experiencing Lagonegro on the patron saint's day means discovering a village with a characteristic historic center, the gateway to the National Park of the Lucanian Apennines Val d'Agri Lagonegrese, and a crossroads between the inner Basilicata region and the Tyrrhenian Sea, during its most vibrant moment.
In 2026, Lagonegro will once again honor its patron saint Saint Nicholas of Bari on the last Sunday of May (May 31), with a solemn Mass and the procession of the saint's statue through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the musical band. Illuminations, concerts, and shows will complete the festivities, fostering the community spirit that characterizes the patronal feast of the village.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the parish and the Municipality of Lagonegro in the weeks preceding the event. The traditional structure includes:
Lagonegro is easily reached by car from the A2 Mediterranean highway (Lagonegro Nord or Sud exit); the historic center is concentrated around the old village.
