The grand patronal feast of Gravina in Puglia at the end of September
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, in the final days of September, Gravina in Puglia (Metropolitan City of Bari) celebrates its patron saint with the Patronal Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, the most cherished event in the city's calendar. Devotion to the Archangel has ancient roots, but since 1674, Saint Michael has been the official protector and primary patron of the city: that year, Bishop Domenico Cennini, urged by the people and clergy, obtained recognition of the patronage from Pope Clement X, confirmed by a papal bull on March 10, 1674. Tradition links the city's salvation in three dramatic moments of its history to the Archangel's protection.
The religious heart of the festival is the Co-Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, elevated to a minor basilica in 1993 and seat of the celebrations for the Diocese of Altamura-Gravina-Acquaviva delle Fonti. September 29th, the liturgical day of the Archangel, is the most solemn moment: from the early morning masses to the celebration presided over by the bishop, the symbolic handing over of the city keys to the patron saint, and the grand procession carrying the statue of Saint Michael through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the heartfelt participation of the local people.
Alongside the religious program, the secular side transforms Gravina into an open-air stage. Luminarie (light displays) illuminate the streets and squares, the Brass Band kicks off the main day by parading through the streets, while Piazza Pellicciari and other squares in the center host concerts, shows, and entertainment for all ages. There is no shortage of markets, food stalls offering typical Murgia flavors, and the traditional fireworks that bring the festivities to a spectacular close.
It is worth noting that in Gravina, the cult of the Archangel manifests in two distinct events: the city's patronal feast in late September (Great Saint Michael) and the more intimate, devotional feast on May 8th (Little Saint Michael), linked to the Fondovito district and the evocative rock-hewn church of San Michele delle Grotte, where the cult arrived from the Gargano sanctuary. However, it is the September festival that involves the entire community and represents the great identity-defining moment for this city in the Bari Murgia.
The program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. As every year, the festivities in honor of Saint Michael the Archangel, patron saint of Gravina in Puglia, will focus around September 29th and will include solemn religious celebrations in the Co-Cathedral Basilica, the procession with the saint's statue, light displays in the historic center, brass band concerts, and shows in Piazza Pellicciari, in addition to the traditional fireworks. The detailed program will be released by the Feast Committee in the weeks leading up to the event.
