Sannio devotion to the patron saint and the miracle of the blood in the heart of the village

In San Lorenzo Maggiore, a municipality of just under 1,900 inhabitants in the province of Benevento, the patronal feast is not just another event: it is the birth certificate of the village's identity. The very name of the town derives from the cult of Saint Lawrence the Martyr, the community's primary patron, and the addition of "Maggiore" serves to distinguish it from the nearby San Lorenzello. Every year, around August 10th, the streets of the center fill with illuminations, music, and faithful arriving from the Sannio towns and beyond, for a few days where liturgy and civic celebration go hand in hand.
The heart of local Laurentian devotion is an ampoule that preserves, according to tradition, the blood of the martyr, kept in the church of Santa Maria. Tradition holds that this blood liquefies on the evening of the vigil of the patronal feast: it is the most awaited moment of the year, and many visitors reach the town specifically to take part in the religious events and witness the miracle. This is not a show, but a community rite experienced with sobriety: those arriving for the first time should approach with respect, as is customary in every patronal feast of Southern Italy.
On the evening of the vigil, when the liquefaction occurs, a devout and evocative procession winds through the town. It is attended by religious, civil, and military authorities, Catholic associations, confraternities, and the praying population, with the participation of the diocesan Bishop. On August 10th, the liturgical day of Saint Lawrence, solemn masses mark the day, and the statue of the Saint is carried through the streets of the village amidst songs and popular devotion.
As in all Campanian patronal feasts, the liturgical part is accompanied by a civic program that enlivens the squares until late at night. Recent editions have included:
The monumental reference point of the feast is the Collegiate Church of Saint Lawrence the Martyr, completed in 1417 and elevated to a collegiate church in 1553, then expanded thanks to the offerings of the community and citizens. Inside, it houses the high altar from the church of Santa Maria della Strada, surrounded by a 17th-century wooden choir, an 18th-century canvas by Francesco Mazzacca depicting the martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, a wooden sculpture of the Saint, and a panel painting of the Madonna and Child between Saints Lawrence and Amandus; the bell tower dates back to 1661. In 1934, the church received a visit from Prince Umberto II of Savoy, who was in town for military exercises.
San Lorenzo Maggiore is located at an altitude of 315 meters, in the hilly hinterland of the province of Benevento, in Campania. In addition to the Collegiate Church, the religious heritage includes the crypt of the church of Santa Maria della Strada with its spring considered miraculous and, in the Piana area, a Benedictine monastic complex from the 11th-12th centuries elevated to a sanctuary in 2022. Those who choose the period of the patronal feast will therefore find, in addition to the festivities, a small itinerary of devotion and Sannio history to explore on foot.
The feast is linked to the liturgical date of August 10th and takes place in the days immediately preceding and following it: in 2025, the festivities were held from August 9th to 12th. For the 2026 edition, at the time of writing, the official program has not yet been published: dates and appointments are usually released close to the event by the Feast Committee and the parish. It is therefore advisable to check the official channels of the Municipality of San Lorenzo Maggiore and the Feast Committee before setting off.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Lawrence the Martyr has not yet been officially announced. The reference remains the liturgical date of August 10th, around which celebrations have always been concentrated in the Municipality of San Lorenzo Maggiore, in the province of Benevento.
Based on tradition, the highlights of the feast are expected as every year: solemn masses in the Collegiate Church of Saint Lawrence the Martyr, the vigil procession with religious, civil, and military authorities, confraternities, and the diocesan Bishop, and the veneration of the ampoule with the martyr's blood which, according to tradition, liquefies on the eve.
No detailed program is available at this time: neither the times nor the names of the artists for the evenings in the square. For updated information, it is advisable to follow the official channels of the Municipality of San Lorenzo Maggiore and the Feast Committee page.
San Lorenzo Maggiore is located in the hinterland of the province of Benevento, in Campania, at an altitude of 315 meters. The town is crossed by the Provincial Road 87, along which the Collegiate Church of Saint Lawrence the Martyr also stands. Those arriving from outside the region can refer to Benevento for rail connections and to Naples-Capodichino airport; the car remains the most convenient way to reach the village.
Religious celebrations, the procession, and performances in the square are free to enter. You only pay for what you consume at the food stalls and in the town's establishments.
The evening of the vigil, that of the liquefaction and the procession, is the most attended: it is advisable to arrive early and park at the entrance to the town, as the historic center is closed to traffic. Wear modest clothing in church and during the procession. August evenings in the hills can be cool: a light sweater is useful.
