The Patronal Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker is a devotional event that brings the community of Moio Alcantaraโa small town in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicilyโtogether every spring. The celebration traditionally takes place on the second Sunday of May to honor the village's patron saint, Saint Joseph in his role as the Worker and guardian of the arts and labor.
The heart of the festival is the procession of the patron saint's statue, carried on shoulders along the traditional route through the historic center, from the Mother Church and back to the main square. This religious pageant is accompanied by the faithful and marks the most heartfelt moment of the day. Characteristic rituals include the blessing of the bells and, at the end of the festivities, the traditional fireworks display that lights up the village sky.
Moio Alcantara sits at an altitude of approximately 538 meters in the Alcantara Valley, in a picturesque location dominated by Monte Mojo, an ancient lateral volcanic cone of Mount Etna that gives the village its name. With just over seven hundred inhabitants, the town preserves the authentic character of small Sicilian villages, where religious festivals play a central role in community life and the local calendar.
The Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker is part of a rich calendar of celebrations that mark the year in Moio Alcantara, ranging from the Peach Festival in summer to the great Feast of the Most Holy Crucifix at the end of September. However, the patronal feast in May remains one of the village's defining moments, an occasion where devotion, music, conviviality, and tradition merge in the streets of the town.
The festival is organized by the parish and the community of Moio Alcantara with the support of the Municipality of Moio Alcantara.
The 2026 edition of the Patronal Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker in Moio Alcantara does not yet have an official published program. Following custom, the festivities should take place on the second Sunday of May, featuring the village's traditional rituals: the procession of the patron saint's statue through the streets of the historic center, the blessing of the bells, and the final fireworks display. Dates and program details will be communicated by the organizers closer to the event.
Moio Alcantara can be reached by car from the A18 Messina-Catania motorway (Giardini Naxos exit), traveling up the Alcantara Valley along the SS185 road. The nearest train station is Giardini-Naxos, on the Messina-Catania line.
The feast is traditionally held on the second Sunday of May. For updated dates and programs, it is recommended to contact the Municipality of Moio Alcantara or the local parish.
The event is free and takes place in the streets of the historic center and at the Mother Church.
