Ten days of faith and tradition in the heart of the Sannio region near Benevento
In San Giorgio del Sannio, in the province of Benevento, the patron saint is more than just a religious figure: he is the very identity of the town, which bears the name of the holy knight. Every April 23rd, the date the Catholic Church commemorates Saint George the Martyr, the town suspends its ordinary lifeโschools includedโto dedicate itself entirely to the celebrations. However, the festivities are not limited to a single day: the solemn celebrations begin as early as April 14th, accompanying the community with over a week of preparatory events leading up to the eve and the day of the patron saint.
The highlight is the procession on April 23rd, which starts in the late afternoon (5:00 PM) and travels through the streets of the historic center. The pageant is accompanied by local associations and the National Association of Knights of Merit of the Republic, a presence that recalls the chivalric nature of the saint. Upon returning, at 7:00 PM, a solemn mass is celebrated in the Mother Church, the liturgical heart of the community. Along the processional route, the town is transformed: for the 2026 edition, the streets were illuminated with five thousand small lamps, a display that made the festival evenings particularly evocative.
The church of Saint George the Martyr has roots dating back to the Lombard era: as early as 991-992, the ecclesia Sancti Georgi de loco Vico was donated by Prince Pandolfo II and his son Landolfo V to the Benedictine monastery of San Modesto in Benevento. Severely damaged by earthquakes in 1688, 1702, and 1732, it underwent reconstruction and restoration; it was solemnly consecrated by Cardinal Orsini on April 1st, 1698, and in 1721, thanks to Prince Carlo III Spinelli, it was elevated to a collegiate church. On January 29th, 2022, the Archbishop of Benevento, Felice Accrocca, elevated the building to a Diocesan Sanctuary for the cult of Saint Gerard Majella: today, the church preserves two devotions, that of the patron Saint George in April and that of Saint Gerard in October.
A martyr of the early Christian centuries, Saint George is one of the most popular figures in Christianity: tradition depicts him on horseback piercing the dragon, an image of the victory of good over evil, and he is venerated as the protector of soldiers and knights. His liturgical feast falls on April 23rd, a fixed date that returns punctually every year and has marked the civil and religious calendar of San Giorgio del Sannio for centuries.
Located just over ten minutes from the provincial capital, San Giorgio del Sannio is one of the most populous centers in the province of Benevento and a commercial and educational hub for neighboring towns. The April patronal festival effectively opens the season of local events, which includes the feast of the Madonna del Carmine in July and the celebrations for Saint Gerard in October. For those visiting inland Campania, participating in the April 23rd procession is a direct and authentic way to connect with the popular religiosity of the Sannio region, far from the most beaten tourist paths.
In 2026, the solemn festivities in honor of Saint George the Martyr in San Giorgio del Sannio opened on April 14th and concluded on April 23rd, the day of the patron's liturgical memory. The announcement was made by the Diocese of Benevento, which released the festival program.
The patronal day featured the procession at 5:00 PM through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by local associations and the National Association of Knights of Merit of the Republic, followed by the solemn mass at 7:00 PM in the Mother Church of Saint George the Martyr, which has also served as the Diocesan Sanctuary of Saint Gerard Majella since 2022. The town was decorated with an illumination of five thousand small lamps.
The Comprehensive Institute of San Giorgio del Sannio suspended educational activities for April 23rd, 2026, in honor of the patron saint's feast: a concrete sign of how deeply rooted this recurrence is in the life of the municipality and the entire area east of Benevento.
The detailed program of individual events is released each year by the parish via the festival poster.
