Patronal Feast of Saint Catald the Bishop

A Devotion Linking Brienza and Taranto

On May 10th, the village of Brienza, in the Province of Potenza, celebrates its patron saint Saint Catald the Bishop. The devotion to the saint, a bishop of Irish origin whose remains were found in Taranto in 1094, took root in Brienza thanks to the noble Caracciolo family, linking the Lucanian community to the Ionian city of Taranto for centuries, where Saint Catald is the principal patron.

The Friendship Pact with Taranto

Among the most significant moments of the feast is the renewal of the Friendship Pact with Taranto: on May 10th, a delegation from Taranto is welcomed at the Town Hall, sealing a spiritual twinning that unites the two communities in the name of their common saint.

Rites and Procession

The religious heart of the day is the pontifical mass followed by the solemn procession with the saint's statue through the streets of the historic center, with the devout participation of the community. The celebrations include masses and moments of prayer, in an atmosphere of deep popular devotion.
