The 'ro pagliaro' bonfire and the patron saint's procession in the Alto Sannio village
The Patronal Feast of Saint Bernardino of Siena is the most iconic event in the calendar of Morcone, a village of just over four thousand inhabitants arranged in a radial pattern on the slopes of Mount Mucre, about 600 meters above sea level in the Tammaro Valley. We are in the Municipality of Morcone, Province of Benevento, in Campania, just a few kilometers from the border with Molise: a corner of the Alto Sannio where stone staircases, houses huddled together, and the remains of the castle provide a natural backdrop for the festivities on May 20th.
This is not a festival built for tourists: it is a ritual that the town has repeated for itself for generations, with the local districts (Contrade) organizing, associations getting involved, and families gathering in the square.
The heart of the festivities is a large bonfire that the locals call 'ro pagliaro' in dialect. According to tradition, Saint Bernardino, during one of his missions along the Pescasseroli-Candela sheep track, was drawn to the beauty of the town and, leaving the main road, headed toward the village where he began to preach against human vices: from lust to gambling, from fraud to blasphemy. Disturbed by the Saint's words, the inhabitants rushed to burn all the objects that symbolized a life of luxury and waste, in an attempt to reconcile themselves spiritually.
From that collective gesture descends today's bonfire: a symbol of joy and, at the same time, an invitation to symbolically burn the vices, perversions, and bad habits that afflict the world. It is perhaps the most direct way a community can express its idea of rebirth.
The structure of the festival is well-established and spans two evenings:
The Monumental Pagliaro is the signature work of the 'Adotta il tuo Paese' association, which every year transforms bundles of wood into a true ephemeral architecture destined to be consumed by fire: in 2026, the pyre reproduced the facade of the church of San Marco Evangelista. The blessed bundles arrive from the Contrade and local associations, in a competition of participation that involves the entire municipal territory.
The devotional aspect remains the focal point of the festival. The Eucharistic celebration precedes the procession, which winds through the alleys and staircases of the historic center, marked by the brass instruments of the band: it is effectively the most beautiful way to visit Morcone, a village that lives entirely outdoors for two days.
As in every patronal feast in Sannio, food is not a side dish but part of the ritual. Around the pagliari, one can taste Saint Bernardino's soup, a dish linked to the Saint and prepared by the Di Fiore agritourism, while the Festival Committee and the C.S.A. Alto Sannio provide bread and frittata, the most popular pairing of the Morcone evenings. Everything is very simple, very local, and distributed in the convivial spirit that characterizes the eve.
Morcone is part of the Borghi Autentici d'Italia (Authentic Villages of Italy) network and deserves a visit even outside the patronal days. Must-sees include: Porta San Marco, the only ancient gate preserved, the remains of the castle overlooking the town, the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Pace, and the Capuchin Convent, where the young Francesco Forgione — the future Saint Pio of Pietrelcina — completed his novitiate. In January, the town also hosts the famous Presepe nel Presepe, a living nativity scene set among the houses of the ancient village.
The Feast of Saint Bernardino of Siena does not offer large stages or high-sounding names: it offers an intact fire tradition and a community that recognizes itself in its own rituals. To understand inland Campania, that of the Alto Sannio looking toward the Matese and Molise, two May evenings in Morcone are worth more than many guidebooks.
The festivities in honor of Saint Bernardino of Siena, patron saint of Morcone (Province of Benevento, Campania), took place on Tuesday, May 19th, and Wednesday, May 20th, 2026, involving the entire municipal territory through religious rites, civic moments, and opportunities for meeting.
The first fire was lit on the eve at the old sports field area, near the municipal villa: the Traditional Pagliaro, blessed and then set ablaze, opened the festival and gave way to a social moment organized by the Festival Committee and the C.S.A. Alto Sannio.
On May 20th, the patron saint's day, the Church of the SS.ma Annunziata hosted the Holy Mass, followed by the procession of the Saint through the town streets accompanied by the Molinara brass band. The most anticipated moment arrived in the evening in Piazza San Bernardino, with the lighting of the Monumental Pagliaro created by the 'Adotta il tuo Paese' association: for 2026, the pyre reproduced the facade of the church of San Marco Evangelista and was fueled by blessed bundles brought by the Contrade and local associations.
Around the bonfire, the gastronomic aspect was not missing: the Saint Bernardino soup from the Di Fiore agritourism and the bread and frittata prepared by the Festival Committee and the C.S.A. Alto Sannio.
The patron saint is celebrated on May 20th, with the eve of the pagliaro on the evening of the 19th. In 2026, the festival took place on Tuesday, May 19th, and Wednesday, May 20th.
Historic center of Morcone (BN): Piazza San Bernardino for the Monumental Pagliaro, the former sports field area near the municipal villa for the Traditional Pagliaro, and the Church of the SS.ma Annunziata for Holy Mass.
Participation in the rites, the procession, and the lighting of the pagliari is free; tastings are offered or proposed for a contribution by the committees. The village is entirely uphill, with stone staircases and paving: comfortable shoes are essential. At an altitude of 600 meters, May evenings can be cool, so it is best to bring a light jacket. Park in the areas on the outskirts of the historic center and walk up.
