About Annunziata Scanzano

On the Ionian coast of Basilicata, Scanzano Jonico celebrates its patron saint and "queen", Maria Santissima Annunziata, at the beginning of May. Three days of faith and celebration, including the celebration of workers and Saint Joseph at the chapel of Casale di Recoleta, the solemn Mass, the procession, and concerts, with a grand evening musical event to conclude the solemnity.

The patron saint of the Ionian city

Scanzano Jonico, a young and lively municipality on the Metapontino coast in the Province of Matera, dedicates its patronal feast to Maria Santissima Annunziata, venerated as the patron saint and queen of the city. The celebrations, held in the first days of May, intertwine religious, civil, and musical dimensions, attracting the entire community and many visitors from the Ionian region.

Three days of celebration

The feast traditionally spans three days. It opens on May 1st with the celebration dedicated to Saint Joseph the Worker and the world of labor, at the chapel of Casale di Recoleta, a rural hamlet in the territory. May 2nd is the day of the solemnity: solemn Mass, procession through the city streets, and in the evening, the grand concert. May 3rd concludes the festivities.

Music and devotion

The 2026 edition featured the announced concert of Silvia Mezzanotte, the historic voice of Matia Bazar, to crown the main day: an event that combines devotional tradition with a show open to all. Illuminations, a band, markets, and stands complete the atmosphere of popular celebration.

Between sea and countryside

Scanzano Jonico is one of the most dynamic centers in the Metapontino area, a land of agriculture and seaside tourism. The Annunciation feast, at the beginning of the beautiful season, ideally marks the start of the Ionian summer and strengthens the community's bond with its identity, between the town center and the countryside of Casale di Recoleta.
