Five days of faith, music, and tradition in the historic center of Buccino
Every year, around the first Sunday of July, the municipality of Buccino, in the province of Salerno, celebrates its patron saint: Maria Santissima Immacolata. This is no ordinary occasion. For the people of Buccino, it is the festival—the one that calls emigrants back home, fills the alleys of the historic center, and marks the beginning of summer in this corner of Campania overlooking the Sele Valley. The celebrations span five days, alternating moments of religious reflection, popular events, and grand musical evenings in the square.
Tradition tells that at the end of June 1537, Buccino was decimated by a violent plague epidemic. It was then that the statue of the Virgin was discovered: carried in procession through the streets of the town and placed in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, it marked, according to popular memory, the beginning of the decline of the contagion, which ended in the first days of July. Since that moment, the Virgin Immacolata has been venerated as the patron saint and protector of the community, and the feast was set at the beginning of the month to commemorate the liberation from the disease.
The Santuario dell'Immacolata, which stands in a panoramic position on the hill near the cemetery, remains the symbolic heart of Buccinese devotion: it is there that the processions of the first day and the solemn Sunday masses are directed.
The liturgical calendar opens with the novena, which precedes the start of the festivities by a few days. The first day of the festival is marked by the Procession of the Mantle, which reaches the Sanctuary from the Mother Church, followed by Holy Mass and the blessing of the image of the Madonna.
Alongside the religious dimension, a sporting event has established itself in recent years that has already entered the hearts of the locals: the Corsa della Madonna – Memorial Don Donato Sica. It is a footrace held in the late afternoon on Saturday, open first to children and then to adults, attracting athletes and enthusiasts from the entire district. More than a competition, it has become an opportunity for gathering that unites sport, memory, and a sense of belonging.
The traditional game of the Palio della Cuccagna (Greasy Pole) is the most lighthearted moment of the entire festival. In the late afternoon of the last day, the central square fills up to watch the challenge on the greasy pole, a pastime from days gone by that the people of Buccino have managed to keep intact, continuing to attract families and curious onlookers. It is the clearest sign of how, in Buccino, the patronal feast is also a collective memory of popular gestures and games.
The secular side of the festival is not just a simple backdrop. Every evening, the town's squares—Piazza Mercato, Piazza San Vito, Piazza Amendola, Piazza Matteotti, Piazza Annunziata—host concerts and shows, with a lineup that in recent years has alternated between tribute bands, contemporary Neapolitan song artists, and groups playing folk music and tammurriata. The marching band concert is unmissable, entrusted to formations of great tradition from Southern Italy, as is the midnight fireworks display that closes the main day amidst the applause of the entire town. Artistic illuminations complete the scenery, transforming the village alleys into a path of light.
Those who arrive for the festival also discover one of the most interesting villages in the Salerno hinterland. Buccino stands on the site of the ancient Volcei, a Lucanian city and later a Roman municipality, and preserves a remarkable Urban Archaeological Park with domus, thermal baths, and remnants of the walls, as well as the National Archaeological Museum housed in the convent of Sant'Antonio. The castle and the maze of medieval alleys serve as a natural backdrop for the processions. A visit to the historic center, before or after the evening events, is the best way to understand why this festival is so deeply rooted.
From July 2 to 6, 2026, Buccino celebrated Maria Santissima Immacolata with a five-day program, opened as early as June 26 by prayer moments that prepare the community for the feast. The organization was handled by the Parish and the Festival Committee, in collaboration with the Pastoral Unit of Buccino and with the patronage of the Municipality.
The common thread was, as always, the alternation between faith and popular celebration: the Procession of the Mantle towards the Sanctuary on the opening evening, the evocative Procession of the Spire accompanied by the singing of the Ave Maria, the solemn Sunday celebration, and the Holy Mass with the sacrament of Confirmation presided over by Archbishop Pasquale Cascio on the final day.
On the secular side, the fourth edition of the Corsa della Madonna – Memorial Don Donato Sica stood out, enriched this year by races reserved for children, along with the traditional Palio della Cuccagna in the central square. Musical evenings brought the Pooh tribute band, the Dexibel Live Show, the folk music of Tammorrasìa, and the concert by Rosario Miraggio to the square, closing an entirely free program.
The band music was provided by the Banda Musicale CittĂ di Francavilla Fontana and the Caposele band; the artistic illuminations were offered by Olearia Pucciarelli. The prayer moments preparing for the feast began on Friday, June 26.
