The living Passion of Christ pageant in the Monti Dauni mountains
In the heart of the Monti Dauni, in the province of Foggia, the small village of Motta Montecorvino preserves one of the most heartfelt and well-attended Holy Week traditions in inland Apulia: the Passio Christi. Every year on Palm Sunday, the streets of the historic center turn into a vast open-air stage where the final moments of Jesus' life, from his arrest to Calvary, are brought to life.
The unique feature of the Passio Christi is its itinerant nature: the audience does not remain stationary before a stage but follows the procession through the streets and alleys of the ancient village, moving from scene to scene. This shared journey brings the spectator closer to the action, turning the narrative of the Passion into an immersive, choral experience where the village's medieval landscape becomes an integral part of the set design.
Over 150 performers bring the pageant to life each year: actors, volunteers, and members of the local community who, with great dedication, portray the people, Roman soldiers, Pharisees, and temple guards. It is described as the largest living Passion pageant in the Monti Dauni.
Behind the scenes, the Passio Christi is above all a major community project. Local women hand-stitch tunics for the crowds and costumes for the soldiers and Pharisees; artisans build wooden crosses for Calvary, while the blacksmith crafts candelabras and braziers. Over the years, the association has also acquired high-quality stage costumes, such as those for the centurions and temple guards, to make the staging increasingly refined.
The Passio Christi has been staged in Motta Montecorvino since 2007, winding through the streets of the small village, traditionally on Palm Sunday. It is organized by the Passio Christi Association, which in recent years has sought to network with neighboring municipalities in the Monti Dauni, involving performers and visitors from nearby towns. The event has become a defining identity marker for the local community and a draw for hundreds of visitors who reach the village during the Lenten period.
