About Pasquetta in Dogliola

In Dogliola, a small hillside village in the Trigno Valley in the province of Chieti, the Pasquetta re-enactment returns, an ancient folk tradition linked to the Epiphany period. On the evening of January 5th, starting from Piazza San Rocco, the Associazione Dogliola in Fiore - Cinque Petali APS brings the village streets to life with traditional songs and house-to-house visits, reviving a begging ritual rooted in community and sharing.

The Pasquetta of Dogliola, an Epiphany ritual

In the heart of the Vastese area, in Dogliola—a hillside village of a few hundred inhabitants perched in the Trigno Valley in the province of Chieti—one of the most evocative folk traditions of the Abruzzo winter survives: the Pasquetta. In the local dialect, this name does not refer to the day after Easter, but to the ancient begging ritual linked to the Epiphany period, when groups of singers would travel through the village from house to house to announce the arrival of the Three Wise Men in Bethlehem and wish prosperity to the families.

Begging songs and house visits

The re-enactment brings back the heart of this custom: the traditional songs and the visits to homes. The singers knock on the doors of the village, intoning typical well-wishing verses and, in return, receive small gifts from the peasant table, following a ritual of hospitality and reciprocity that has its roots in the rural culture of the Upper Vastese. It is an oral tradition passed down from generation to generation, made of simple melodies, community voices, and the warmth born from meeting on the doorstep.

A community heritage

The event is promoted by the Associazione Dogliola in Fiore - Cinque Petali APS, which has been committed for several years to the recovery and promotion of the historical and cultural roots of the area. For the small municipality of Dogliola, the Pasquetta represents an opportunity to rediscover ancient customs and to renew that spirit of community and sharing that has always characterized the village. The initiative is part of the wider mosaic of folk festivals and traditions of Abruzzo, among the richest and most vibrant in Central Italy.

Where and when

The re-enactment takes place in the historic center of Dogliola, with a meeting point and departure from Piazza San Rocco, near the church dedicated to the patron saint. The evening of the Epiphany transforms the village streets into a path animated by songs and encounters, open to residents and visitors who wish to experience the authentic atmosphere of a peasant festival handed down through the centuries.
