When sport meets wine

The Palio Nazionale delle Botti delle Città del Vino (National Palio of Barrels of the Wine Cities) is a travelling competition that, from April to October, crosses the wine-producing municipalities of Italy belonging to the National Association of Wine Cities. In Vittorio Veneto, in the province of Treviso, the race arrives in the charming medieval village of Serravalle, where teams compete by pushing barrels along a course that starts from Piazza Vecellio.

Race rules

Each team consists of five people — three men and two women — who compete in several events. Pushing the 500-litre barrel is the main discipline, with specific rules for uphill, flat, and downhill sections. Alongside this, there is the women's race on lighter barrels, the transport relay, and the filling test, in which the entire team collaborates to fill a barrel with water.

A celebration for the whole city

Winning the local races grants the right to participate in the national final, where the strongest Wine Cities compete for the Palio. The event, organised by the Pro Loco Vittorio Veneto (local tourist board), is more than just a competition: it's an opportunity to promote typical products, wineries, and the identity of a territory that makes wine its flag, animating the centre of Serravalle with stands, crowds, and a festive atmosphere.
